I want to become a police officer after I finish college, but as being a female I was told that i should start learning how to defend myself now, because its harder to fight a guy off if your a female, but with training it would be easier. So i was wondering if there's a self teach method that anyone uses for defense that you can do on your own?

Fallen,

Most colleges have Judo clubs or Martial arts clubs, join one... You will learn more there than you can ever teach yourself on your own. If you are really stuck to work by yourself, get into a gym that has heavy and speed bags and start practicing on those. Other than that, I would suggest going to the gym to lift weights and to start running... Hope this helps.

Of course you can teach yourself defensive moves. They will be completely ineffective if you are ever attacked by anyone but yourself.

1. We aren't living in Hollywood.
2. You will be trained on how to properly defend yourself IF you attend a police academy.
3. I would initially focus on becoming physically fit in order to gratify the needs of self defense.

Good luck to you.

+1

Make sure you are in shape and the academy will do its part to give you a foundation to build on. Remember that the academy is just the start. AFTER the academy is when the real learning starts.

I agree pretty much with what was said before. Without some kind of background, most of the self-teach methods are worthless. After all, you can't practice a joint lock or wrist manipulation on yourself...Well, I guess you can but it would be really pointless. Check to see if your university offers basic female self-defense courses. A lot of those will teach you certain things and they'll bring in a heavily padded guy so you can see how effective your strikes might be. Check out and see if your school has martial arts clubs on campus, or perhaps a dojo nearby that may offer you a student discount.
In terms of the female/male thing, no fight is easy, be it male/male, female/female, or male/female. And more than likely, you'll never be able to meet a guy pound for pound in terms of muscle mass unless you're a bodybuilder. It's about using your head, go in with that perspective and you'll get along fine. Best of luck.

Yeah I would have to agree with everyone else so far.

Trying to teach yourself defense tactics isn't very effective. You need someone to guide you so if you are doing something incorrectly they can correct it right away instead of trying to break yourself of bad techniques later.
