I wanted to know how difficult it is for women to get into the academy and what their success rate may be if they do get in?
Thanks
:)

In my experience, gender plays almost no role in the success of a candidate. You either have what it takes to be a cop, regardless of your gender, or you don't.
It's no harder for a woman to become a police officer than it is a man. Stay out of trouble, get in shape, and do your best.

Citicop is right. When I went through the Trooper Academy, in Sitka Ak, we had several females that did very well.

Same in mine. They get preferential treatment in all those areas. No joke. A supervisor's nightmare is to have a woman or minority who's doing a lousy job. They have to be treated with kid gloves and it takes 10X more documentation to have them held responsible. Again, I'm not exaggerating a bit.
We have a woman chief right now who is excellent and no nonsense. But even she rolls her eyes at the crap women get away with. The "L" word (lawsuit) brings the city to its knees at the slightest provocation.
I realize this has come about because historically women and minorities have suffered abuse and discrimination in LE, but it's like affirmative action, how much longer do we have to pay for it?

I'm guessing she's at the front of the line then? :p

It all depends on how bad you wanna be a Cop and what your capabilities are. Your success as an LEO depends completely on yourself.
Good luck ;)

For the Anchorage Police Department when it comes to the Chief Selection the applicant is just a number. There is nothing there that can be used to descriminate against the applicant, no pictures, no names, no family status, religious preference etc.
We have a female Captain, Lts, couple of Sgts (5 that I think of right off the bat) and lots of female officers.
I think the vast majority of police departments long ago realized that you don't have to be a 6'+ 200 lb male in order to be a good officer. If it is a career you want to do you should pursue it. Start by doing a ride along with your local department to see what the officers do in a day, maybe even ride with a female officer.

You know what, I totally agree with you on this one. Departments should promote those who excel in their agency by their accomplishments and not for the general physical makeup of any said individual.

Totally agree! I am going through the training part now, I have been literally working my butt off to get into the best shape possible. I have done ride alongs and have spoke to countless departments as well as police officers all men by the way and none have treated me any different. They all have been extremely helpful and continue to do so!
