If you have only a high school diploma and no other training what's the best way to start in Law Enforcement ?

I know most agencies here in Cali don't require college, but I have to think that an AA in say Criminal Justice would help.

Any answers ?

Start applying and testing.I've tested with LASD just recently for the CA position, pass the test now preparing for Oral.

I also tested with Las Vegas Metro last year pass there too, but let results expire due to going thru the background process with the Orange County Sheriffs.

Didn't get the position I applied for (Sheriff Special Officer).

Didn't mean for the question to be misleading.

Your question wasn't misleading - just pretty basic. It's like asking how you score points in basketball - well, first you have to put the ball through the (correct) hoop...

Go in the military.

Honroably Discharged Veterans in most agencies get 5 to 10 extra points added to their final score ( no matter what job they did in the military).

USAF Security Police 1978-82. I went in at age 17 , right after HIgh School.

Classes/degrees geared toward LE help. Volunteering at your local PD etc also builds a resume.

Think- public contact and philanthropy =)

...if you want to stand out from the normal old- high school diploma/clean record crowd. Something that says- I'm committing MYSELF to this kind of career and WILL succeed at it. Sit back and think about things that would set you apart from the guy that is neck and neck with you in all areas. You want to be competitive in this competitive hiring process.

Then dogged determination along with a 2 year ( if not a 4 year) degree seems to be the answer.

I somewhat disagree with a couple of the above posts. You don't need a degree in CJ to be competitive. FWIW, I did not have a degree in CJ. I suggest you get a degree in whatever you like, preferably not CJ.

If you end up getting hurt on the job and you are unable to continue LE, what will you do now?

A degree shows a number of things, but a commitment to LE isn't necessarily one of them.

Psychology, Sociology, Public Administration (what I have), Underwater Basket Weaving. They are all unrelated.....but related to LE.
