I need to know how to gain weight. I have a very fast metabolism and I eat more than enough throughout the day, but I can not gain a bloody pound! And nobody needs to offer me their fat, I get plenty of that.
I am in good physical shape, I just want to put on some extra weight and the like, not much, maybe like 15-20 pounds of muscle. I'll never be as big as some of the guys here (not calling anyone fat btw).
Also, I have another question too. I injured my knee about six months ago (picking up a 42" Philips LCD TV - which weighs about 175 pounds or so in the box and I did manage to pick it up, so at least my ego is saved, rofl). Now, my doctor said I've injured the ligaments and tendons. I've kept off it for six months, except for things like foot patrol at my security job and so on. Now, I run on it and it's kind of a dull ache alot of the time.
I can work through the pain - but I am concerned if I should continue as I am or not? I'm fine for about two miles on a run before it starts to hurt, but it's not painful enough to make me stop - but I also have a very high threshold for pain, so I am just worried I am pushing it too far. Perhaps I should wear the sleeve thing my docs gave me?
Any ideas?
Edit: Unfortunately I am the only one in my family who works out at all except for my older brother, and well, he has this girlfriend and he's too cool to help me (his only little brother, rofl) out, so yeah. Thats why I'm asking dumb questions here.

Go to your local health food store and pick up some protein powder,
and just double your intake of meat protein.
This is what my friend did, and he looks fabulous. :D

I take is a bulk carb, a whey protein blend, bulk creatine, and bulk bcaa. And i spend a fraction of what other people pay and get the same results if not better i think than the people who spend hundreds
This is good advice. It's what I did and it should work for you too, assuming there isn;t anything wrong with you that is causing this...I've always been thin at 6'2" tall, but at my lowest weight (140 ) I actually had cancer unbeknownst to me. I am at 190 now, and can bench press a little over my weight on a good day.
I don't take the bulk carb though, I drink juice for that and it has worked fine for me. It is supposed to be most helpful to drink the protein shakes after your workout.

First off, what's your lifting schedule like? Your not gonna gain a pound of anythin desirable unless you're lifting, and lifting HEAVY. Google 5x5 workouts, or try a solid 4x6 based routine. To find a routine you like and believe in you're going to need to spend a good amount of time researching and reading on line.
What's your food intake like? 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight a day is recommended to build muscle. Your caloric intake should be about 3,000/day. The best way to do this is breaking it down into 4-6 meals each day. I can't tell you much about fats and carbs as they're not an issue for me, but I'm sure someone else will pick that up.
Last but certainly not least, get SLEEP! Your workouts will not be near as productive as they could be if you're not getting enough sleep. That is the time the body repairs itself and grows. Get a minimum of 8 hrs.
Hope this helps, and keep us updated on your progress.

Just for the sake of enlightenment purposes, so I know what to look for when I go shoppin', do you know what the name on it will be or do you have something in particular you recommend?

also good advice. I have done something similar to 5x5, but I can only lift 3 times a week max. I got the best results with more rest, you will have to experiment with that to see what works for you. I tried working out every other day at one point, but I stopped making any progress after a while. Rest is important, and everyone is different as to how much they need.

Yeah, I will give every other day and wearing my knee sleeve a shot. I only doubled up the past two days because I am going to PA tomorrow and therefore I can't do any of my workout stuff.

Just for the sake of enlightenment purposes, so I know what to look for when I go shoppin', do you know what the name on it will be or do you have something in particular you recommend?I like the BSN Syntha-6 protien. It has worked and it tastes good...very important;). I have found it cheaper here than other places: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/bsn/synth.html
Shop around, there are lots of brands out there. Unless you have problems with milk products, a whey protien blend will be what you are looking for. Most products are more or less the same, some have a bcaa supplement in them already, some don't, etc... I get this one mainly because I think it tastes good. It won't help if it is too nasty to drink :p
If you are working out with weights, it is a bad idea to do it every day. Your body will never have enough of a chance to recover and build new muscle. You will get better results lifting less often. Like I wrote above, I got MUCH better results 2 or 3 times a week than when I did it every other day.
Storm, first if you are still concerned about your knee, you should get a check-up w/ the MD. That would also be a good time to discuss your goals. He may have some insight on some things to do that won't stress your knee, let it heal, and still add some weight.
You will have to find what works best for your body type as far as reps, weight, schedule, diet and supplements. Talk to as many people as you can. Menshealth.com has workouts that will give you ideas. Talk to the salesman at GNC and see what kind of help he/she can be as far as supplements. Keep in mind, they are selling products. Education is the key to a good fitness program. Healthy, sustainable mass will take some time and effort but definitely worth it. Once you get in a routine, switch it up so you reduce the tendency to plateau.
Good luck.

Yeah, I have an MRI tomorrow morning (bright effin' early too, gotta love it). He said I'll probably need arthroscopic surgery, fine by me as long as I can get back to 100 percent. He suspects I have a lateral meniscus tear.
Will do, thanks for the advice.

Back in the day, before all this protein powder stuff, I was a scrawny kid in the army. 6'2" and 159lbs. I could run like a striped ape but had no weight at all.
My platoon sgt took it upon himself to fatten me up. His method involved dark german beer. I gained 33 lbs in a year. :D

BSN is a huge rip-off company but I like syntha-6. Its a pretty good blend and the cookies & cream is the best tasting protein powder I have ever had... by far the best. It is a little pricey but most good blends are. The rest of their stuff is overpriced and under-performs, IMO.
The absolute best way to gain sick amount of muscle is The Strap by Fizogen.... I am being completely sarcastic with this comment. I dont know if anyone has ever saw an ad for this thing, but it is the most ridiculous, over-the-top supplement scam i have ever seen. Google is and see what I am talking about.
Basically the best supplement you can take is food. Lots of clean calories. Don't go and eat a bunch of Big Macs. Actually I personally would try and limit the amount of red meat. Focus more on fish and chicken. And lots of carbs too. Lots of fruit and oatmeal and such. Protein bars. whatever you can do. Just dont stop eating drinking water.
Lift heavy and get a lots of rest. When you lift do compound lifts. No Isolation bs, no concentration curls. You need to do Squats, dead lifts (i guess those will be a problem though with you knee which is bad bc these are 2 big ones), benchpress, Pull ups, dips, bent over rows... You can find a plethora of information about this stuff on the internet. I really wish I could post link in here.
Also I dont know how old you are, but I have had an extremely fast metabolism my whole life and now I am a week away from 24 and it is finally starting to slow down somewhat.
Just keep training (and resting), eating (clean), drinking lots of water and researching and be patient and consistent and things will happen.

I'll keep that in mind. And hey, if it tastes like cookies and cream, I am happy as hell about it!
I will look up the Strap when I get home from work and after I get a nap (sigh, third shift ftl), and I don't want to get in any trouble with the interweb here.
Yeah, I eat pretty good, I avoid the junk food and that crap, except for my candy bars on third... Otherwise, I fall asleep. But noted, I'll look around for protein bars or some such when I run up to the mall next.
Definately helps to know what to do though, once my knee is good to go (got another doc's appointment this friday), I will get on those things. Right now I'm working on my basic push ups, sit ups and pull ups, so I can do stuff that won't aggrivate my knee. I may try 2-3 times a week for a run, maybe, it depends on how bad my knee screams at me for it.
Thanks for the advice!

I would agree with that. The protein drinks are the only thing I ever buy from them. You could mortgage your house if you took all the things that are available, but you don't need all that. You DO need something that tastes good enough to drink though ;) and personally I'm willing to spend a little more for good taste.

will a total gym suffice for a while? I'm a poor college kid and even poorer when I start the academy in January (i am self sponsored :( ). Remember...this is for skinny people. I'm 5'10" and 155 lbs. I know it will get to a point where it won't be enough resistance, but for now it should be ok until I have more time to get to a gym?
