Just wanted to say a word of thanks to those members who have given some great advice within this particular forum. I flew back home to take the written and physical test with the local PD and I successfully passed both of them. Granted, I didn't blow anyone away with my results in the physical exam, however, I exceeded the minimums in all categories. 26 people showed up and I was only 1 of 9 who were left standing at the end of the day.
This department doesn't have exceedingly high pass/fail requirements for the initial PFE (40% of Cooper standards), however the academy graduation requirements are 90%. So, I have a long way to go physically. What really suprised me were the number of guys who appeared to be in great physical condition, but failed the exam. The guy I was partnered up with ripped off 65 push ups (compared to my paltry 20), but then proceeded to collapse before we started the 1.5 mile run. Another guy with a similar physique blew chunks right before we started. The last of the guys who were really built finished the run by walking in with a squad car following behind him. I really felt bad for that guy.
So, it just goes to show that being ripped doesn't mean you're in great shape. Of all the 9 guys left, we were all relatively thin with little bulk, but if that dept wants 90% at graduation, I have another big mountain to climb.
In closing, thanks alot to Switchback, Piggy, JDS, and others. You guys have been a great resource over the last three months. Now I'm off to do the leg work for the background packet. (I really lucked out and was given 6 weeks to finish it. The person who does the initial stability interview is behind, and won't be ready to review my packet until August. Of course, the flip side of the coin is the fact that I'm behind candidates who have been processed since Feb. of this year).
