November is a misserable month for ta trip in northern/central Europe. Rainy weather, star getting cold, foggy in the morning. Koblenz, Düsseldorf, Köln, Dortmund und Waterloo. All in one week. OMG:eek:
With all that the central point will be Cologne Düseldorf is only a few miles north of the city, Dortmund around 70 miles northeast, Koblenz ca. 90 miles south and Waterloo will be a three hr ride (when the streets are free from traffic). The Armeemuseum in Koblenz is great, I was down there many years ago and I liked it. As you know, Germany has history after and behind every stone. Also hear in the Rheinland area.
But, be sure, I do not drink beer in Düsseldorf with you. They have a dark beer they call "ALT" translation "OLD" and I don't like old beer. The cities of Düsseldorf an Cologne are enemies since generations. Don't ask me why;)

Patch, thanks for the information. I did not realize that Waterloo was so far away from Cologne. I think that I will strike Waterloo off my list.

I loved your explanation about Alt beer. I don't like "old" beer either, but Duesseldorf "Alt" beer sounds interesting and I will try a glass or two.

There is no german word "aubierdem" but I think Suzanne thought about "außerdem".

February is on season in itself. We have normaly three seasons here in the Cologne area, cold rain, warm rain and road construction. In other countries they say summer, winter and blocked roads;):D

Sine a few years you can't make a good forecast for the carneval season. This years all the days around Rosenmontag are lightly sunny. But this year on Rosenmontag, I was off duty and watched the parade with a few friends and a lot of beer, we had rain, rain and - rain. I was wet until my bones and got a nasty cool.

The best time to visit our area are may - september, sometimes early october. Than you have the chance to get a few dry days.

BTW: BEWARE, don't try the Dusseldorf Alt Bier!!!!!!!!!

Try the good old Kölsch from Cologne!!!!!!!!!

Actually both of those you mentioned, Histfan, due to my love for Mozart.

I love Mozart also, which was why I chose to go to Salzburg. Yes, I got to visit both his "Geburtshaus" the house he was born in and his "Wohnhaus" the house he actually lived in. It was a real treat to see the actual violin and pianoforte he played as a child. I found his "Wohnhaus" to be more interesting and educational than his "Geburtshaus", but his "Geburtshaus" had more character and charm.

I have pictures and books of both places if you would like to see them.

How wonderful~really! Did you learn anything about Mozart that few of knowledge of, or information that has rarely been written about him?

This is what I find most interesting about visiting such places, those little gems of life history that you can only be blessed with by actually being where he danced, laughed and created his masterpiece collection.

I learned a couple of things that might qualify as obscure knowledge. Mozart and his father, Leopold, were avid target shooters using air rifles. The name of that sport escapes me now, I will have to look it up, but it was quite popular in Europe during the 18th century.

I also found out that Mozart's sister, Nannerl, was actually a better musician than he was. Mozart was a better composer, though. Nannerl's talent was a victim of 18th and 19th century chauvinism. Playing musical instruments was not considered a proper activity for a young lady, so she was forced to stop when she reached marrying age. It was a pity, because everyone who heard her play agreed she was magnificent.

I did not the above information about Mozart before my trip, but perhaps it is common knowledge among Mozart experts.

No, not skeet shooting. It was called "Bölzlschiessen" and used rifles that shot dart-like projectiles expelled with compressed air, much like modern BB guns. The darts were shot at colorful, often bawdy, targets. No wonder Mozart liked it.

Like the train stations in the big cities all over the world the Cologne main train station has it's homeless, drug users, pocket pickers, alcoholics, punks, gypsies and a lot of other well known people. But the hotels should be OK in that area but, it is the centre of the city and the hotels are a bit more expensive there than the hotels in the suburbs are. If money is not a main goal for you, try the Hyatt in Koeln Deutz. It is on the other side of the river Rhein but you have a fantastic view over the river to the old centre and the Cathedral. But it isn't cheap. Maybe you google it first. The hotels in the PCT Driet and I work in will be nothing for tourists from other countries esp. if we know them.
If you find a hotel and you want to know something about the area, please let us know and we will let you know what you want.

Just a funny story:

About 5-6 years ago I was attending an advanced officer training class and I met an LASO deputy who worked out of Malibu. He told me that he once had a female trainee who was blonde and quite pretty. They quickly became known as "The Ken and Barbie Team."

He told me that once in a while, to have a littel fun, whenever they pulled over a car with out of state license plates they would play a little game. The female deputy would approach first and say in an exaggerated Valley Girl accent, "Wow, you were, like, totally speeding!" Both hotels are in the centre and at the Tourist strip "Ringe", so called because there is a street ring around the centre. The name changes every few hundred meters but there are a lot of shops, bars, pubs, discotheks and - troublemakers. The cops from the centre PCT try their best to make the streets safe but on the weekends there is a lot of trouble.

If you don't want to go there in the very late evening or in the very early morning, both hotels are in a safe area. And with a taxi (cap) not too far away from the railway station and, when no road is blocked, a 20 minutes ride from the airport.
Next week I'll ask the community policing officer from that PCT what will be the better hotel. The Ambassador has the S-Bahn in front of the door. To all directions. The Flandrischer Hof is in a side road but also near the S-Bahn station, just a 3-4 minutes (tourist steps) walk.

What do you plan to see in Cologne? Sure, the cathedral. But what else? Maybe we can be in assistance for you and check something up before you come over. If you come in the first two october weeks it is possible for me to get some time. My wife and daughter will be in the USA and my son will be in Turkey with my parrents that time. End of september - 13.october there is the fall break in the schools in my state.

Ok, you busted me. By the way, do you have a favorite Mozart opera?

Bastien und Bastienne- I find it charming and innocent how Bastienne and Bastien engage with one another, and even more amazing that Mozart wrote this at age 12.

My favorite opera of all time is La Traviata~sheer pleasure!
When Violetta dies within her remorseful lover's arms in the end,
I think to myself....this IS OPERA!
Bravo, to Verdi for making such a masterpiece.
*My favorite lead tenor is Placido Domingo in La Traviata and Pagliacci.*

I could go on, but may I ask if you have a favorite opera?
Do you also have a favorite piece that stands out from all composers?

My favorite opera is "Don Giovanni" by Mozart. Whenever I see and/or hear that opera it evokes such powerful emotions. I go from laughing at Leporello's antics to real terror when Il Commandatore actually comes to the feast. The final scene when the Commandatore drags Don Giovanni down to hell is truely masterful. My favorite song in the opera is when Leporello sings "Madamina, il Catologo e Questo" to Donna Anna. Not only is the song amusing, but the music Mozart wrote-- especially the florish in the middle -- just gives me an overwhelming feeling of joy.

I also like "Largo al Factotum" by Rossini from "The Barber of Seville." This is the famous "Figaro" aria that almost everyone is familar with. That song never fails to make me laugh out loud, especially at the "soy il factotum della cita..." refrains.

I've noticed a consistant pattern with me, I tend to shy away from the dark operas, and Don Giovanni is rather dark for me. Also, the finale is too light to be appropriate in comparison to Act 1 and the scenes leading up to his finale.

But, by no means is this putting the great Mozart down in any form, Hist, it's just my own feelings towards this opera....
I will always adore his pieces.

Patch,

English Translation:

Thanks again for all your help. I appreciate it very much. I am not a late night party person, so the “Ringe” neighborhood sounds fine to me.

Besides the Dom, I want to see the Romisch-Germanisches Museum, the Cologne Stadtmuseum, and the NS-Dokumentationszentrum. I would also like to take a day and go see the Army Museum in Koblenz, but I may not have enough time for that. I would like to hear any suggestions you have.
How many days do you want to stay here and when do you plan to come over. Maybe, when I'm off duty I have the chance to accompany you in the city a bit of time. The three museums are not far away frm the Ringe. The roman-german museum is at the right side if the cathedral and also the other two are not too far away.

Oh, I totally understand. I enjoy "The Magic Flute" but I consider it one of Mozart's weakest works. Others think it is a masterpeice. The world would be a pretty boring place if we all liked the same things.

I agree the world would be boring place if we all had the same likes and dislikes.
If you look at the brilliance of the complete composition of all opera, Hist,
isn't just amazing how it touches us all on every level? :)

Yes, I do like The Magic Flute as well, and I love the sybolism written in Act 11 :)

You just hit the nail right on the head Suzanne!

Since you brought up composition and I noticed a line from Hamlet in your signature, do you like Shakespeare as much as you like opera?

I missed this the first time I read your reply. Are you talking about the Masonic symbolism? Or do you mean the whole Isis and Osiris cult symbolism?

Sorry to have to say this, but this thread's purpose has veered off-course and is now a bit too self-serving. Please resort to PM's or exchange email addresses to further this dance. ;)
