I didn't know where this question would fit.

I've been trying to figure out what type or brand of knife Bear Grylls uses to do that show.

I've been to the Discovery forums and can't seem to find the answer... well I do, but it seems there are several opinions, and I don't want to join any forum that I won't visit on any regular basis.

I'm not big into knives, but I'd really like to know the type and brand he uses, so that I can get one similar to it at some point, because it seems like an ultra sturdy piece of equipment that holds a good edge thru pretty severe use.

Anyone that might know? All I can really tell is that it is a sheathed knife.

There are a ton of decent knives out there. The things I woudl look for is a fixed blade and the right alloy (do you want a razor's edge with a more brittle blade or a good edge with durability). Many of the main manufacturer's websites have a section that discusses the differences in the alloys.

I have a Benchmade Nimravus that I found to be a good compromise between being a high-end knife, but not so expensive that you are afraid to use it. It has served me well in Iraq, Afghanistan, and daily tactical operations. If get a chance, hold one and you will know the feel of a quality knife... I can't explain it, but you will know. :) Worst case scenario, I'll just bring mine on my next trip through your neck of the woods.

According to his blog, after trying several knives, he know uses, and apparently endorses this one

http://www.bayleyknife.com/bear.htm

For this price, close to $700, I think everyone would agree you can find a much lower prices knive that works just as well

Try this one, has a good rep

Thanks all.

I didn't know he had a blog, but searching the forums I got so many different answers that I didn't know what to believe.

It would figure that he'd have a custom made/endorsed knife... because you know they gave him his for promotions...

I'm going to look into both the Bechmade and the Gerber lines ya'll suggested. My budget may decide what I get.

Thanks again.

If you can wrap your budget around it, SOG makes really nice knives, folders and fixed. Check eBay and you can find a lot of them for very reasonable prices. I got a SOG Trident Tanto for about $65 there. I always see them in magazines, web sites and gun and knife shows for a little over $100. If you go to eBay and search for SOG you will get a pretty good list of all different models. I have been really happy with mine.

You can't go wrong with Cold Steel either. I have quite a few of those (mostly fixed) that I really like. They're kind of expensive, but it only took a few times before my wife finally stopped getting on me about them and just accepted it.:p

I also have a small Kershaw clip folder that fits in my watch pocket on my jeans that has served me very well for a very long time. I have to sharpen it a little more often than some other knives, but it is very portable and does a great job. I got it at Wal Mart of all places for $35.

Knives are very subjective and personal, I would definitely recommend that you go to a gun and knife show or something and handle a few to find one that fits you well (weight, size, handling, carry options, etc...). I hope you find a good knife that suits you well, because it can become a partner that could be with you for a very long time. Happy knife hunting.

kinda of off subject but i think there is a couple youtube videos and other rumors going around that the show is fake and that the guy sleeps in hotels at night.

like i believe there was an episode where there is a distinct rock that is shown on the show which is like 2 or 3 miles near a highway

i like survivorman better anyways LOL
