The city does not want to and has fought many battles on their behalf. In matter of fact, they try very hard to increase their presence. Even to the point of free dental care and computer labs.

I'm ready. My job isn't. I'll just keep on putting the transfer requests in until one gets approved. Or maybe I'll have to find a new agency. Either way, I'll be down there eventually. By the way, I'm thinking of the Schertz area or the New Braunfels area. What do you recommend for a family with two young children?

Either one is fine. Schertz will cost you big bucks to buy a house. Other places like Live Oak, Selma, Cibolo are good also. New Braunfels is in Comal County, which will have the least taxes. All these areas are right in my 'hood so let me know when you plan on moving, I might be able to help you settle in if your not familiar with how 'stuff works in Tejas! Me and the wife will never leave this area, unless of course it turns into a California J.R.

TX I had a question for you since you're from the San Antonio area. I was up there this past weekend to hit fiesta Texas and saw at every construction site there were unmarked looked like POV trucks with a wide assortment of red and blues all over the vehicle. The folks in the vehicles looked like officers but i didnt know if they were in department issued vehicles or POVs. I heard you say somewhere that you used your POV and outfitted it with lights to work the construction areas. Is that whats going on in this case, off duty work in fully decked out POVs?

Yep. Those are usually SAPD Officers who, still have agencies who haven't freaked out over this, placed in the TC in Jan:
(13-a) "Police vehicle" means a vehicle of a
governmental entity primarily used by a peace officer, as defined
by Article 2.12, Code of Criminal Procedure, for law enforcement
purposes.
There has been no changes in the emergency vehicle sections, or color restriction sections and nothing has really changed, unless your a paranoid desk worker.
I purchased a used CVPI to do this work a year or so ago and invested about 10K in it with lights so I could make some cash offduty, and not have to work typical side jobs. The guys in trucks simply installed some lights on the headache racks, or what-not and do the same thing. At the time, I needed a newer vehicle badly and the car Was a steal at auction. It's my avatar picture.

This is strange. TCLEOSE views the excluded federal leos differently and lists them as approved for licensure.

I was told he laws on peace officers exclude Federal Officers from the status to keep the State of Texas from paying death benefits to Federal Officers. It will all probably be changing anyway. Look a complete re-write of 2.12 of the CCP.
The Lew Enforcement Committee of the House is hearing testimony on Monday for requirements to be designated a police agency. One of the things that I know that they are looking at it "Does a peace officer report to elected officials." Could be a problem for some of the State Commissions (Pharmacy etc) as well as private colleges and hospitals as well as transit.

TCLEOSE does not view them differently. TCLEOSE simply says that they can test without going to an academy. IOW, if a Federal Officer wants to become a TEXAS LEO, he can challenge the TCLEOSE test.
Feds are not listed as Peace Officers in Texas because they have not met the Texas laws required to be peace officers. However, they do have recognition in the Code and have certain authority and privileges.

I live in San Antonio, however I will say nearly ANY city in Texas is better to raise a family than anywhere in NY. I lived and went to HS in NY (not NYC etc ).
Would I raise a child/family on a border town with Mexico? No. Can crime happen anywhere, sure. I'd just rather not live THAT close to the border with Mexico. Would you be OK in Del Rio? Most likely yes. I've been there and it seems to be a nice place. However I just couldn't do it unless I lived further away.

Well it depends on where your coming from, small town crappy mall with limited things to do for the kids. We do have a small mall(Kinda :)) bowling alley, movies etc. several places to eat but they are not that great, too many burger/ taco places. want red lobster or olive garden you'll be driving to San Antonio it's about 21/2 hrs away plenty to do there, get a season pass for sea world or six flags.
Schools are OK, i woudn't call them Great but my kids are learning and staying out of trouble, they are gangs here but 99% are just wannabe so they don't really cause any problems. If you raise your kids to make good choices they'll have no problems.
They do like to run redlights here.....so wait when it turns green;)
If you have a boat or kayak the lake and fishing is very nice, they have several bass tournaments here and catch big ones on a regular bases.
Crime is not so bad, lot better than San Antonio area nearly no real violet crime, most are breaking in cars (if you park on the street) stealing radios etc. lawnmowers, just whats easy picking, i think most of the crime is just younger kids needing beer money.
If your married.........your wife better get used to not working, very few jobs and most won't hire unless your fluent in spanish.
House prices range from 110 to 250 for nicer house in good neighborhoods.
As long as you can afford to make trips to San Antono and get away from here it's not that bad........just Hot and dry.
Lot's of dope though so good for work.

I figured that there'd be lots of dope. That's what worries me. Where there's smuggling there's violence. I spent some time in Nogales with the BP. I know how the smuggling affects life there. I'm sure that Del Rio isn't as bad, but I'm just being very cautious. I've got a two year old and a newborn. I'm sure that if we move there I'll put the kids in private school.
As far as the wife, is there work at the AF base? I'm a reservist with AF OSI, and I hope to make some friends over there. Is there a decent college in Del Rio? My wife has been taking classes and wants to finish a teaching degree.
The lake sound pretty cool. I enjoy bass fishing. I found something online that says that they actually stock stripers. I’d love to buy a boat. That’s something that I’ll never afford while living on Long Island.

Del Rio is not the same as Nogales for sure, much safer and nothing like the gang influence, you really have to look for any tagging to find it, still mostly looser kids bored.
Their is some work on base, depending on work skill and then the spanish requirement wouldn't apply, my wife had a part-time job their but my kids are in High School and it conflicted, plus it was min wage.
Teaching would be better, she could proberly get a job easier.
Yes they are stripers here but the real catch are Large mouth Bass, don't have a boat yet but a Kayak is real fun and plus a good workout.
Plus side is you can go to the base and use their gym (State of the Art) play racketball, or the pool. I think the base influence changes the typical Border town a little, more Anglo's around ha ha

Man, that's just strange. On Long Island, and the North East in general, there's no game fish sought after more than the striped bass. Why would I want a 3 bound large mouth when I can get a 35 pound fighting machine?
Not to say they don't go after stripper's just many more Bass 3pds are normal....nice is 7-9, several 10pd+ are caught each year, good stuff for sure.

SAPD? Holla if you need anything.
Checking in as a soon to be Texan. I have the chance to relocate to Houston with my company and am taking it. We should be moving out there some time this summer. Just in time for the hurricanes and humidity. I don't mind though...California is circling the drain rather quickly and I'm ready for something different.
I don't know what my future in LE might be down there as I do have a pretty well paying job (even if it is at a desk). I may eventually apply to be a reserve deputy with Harris County, we'll see.

Nope. ICE to ICE transfer. I'll be assigned to the San Antonio Field Intelligence Group. I'm not sure what to expect because it is a brand new group. We will be the first group of 1811's assigned to an intelligence office. I think that we'll mostly be doing the field work that the Intel Analysts can't do. It should be lot's of interviews, surveillance, etc. I EOD on 4/26. No case load. It sounds pretty cool.
I was a LEO. '60 to '76, Harris County. I now live in Thrall (just far enough away from weird Austin to be safe!). Have 4 kids, all LEO's, 3 in Texas (Williamson County, Hutto and Thrall) and one in Kentucky (Hopkinsville). Although I'm "retired", I'm not, and I'm publisher and editor of a new LEO newspaper...Badge of Honor, covering Central Texas.

I grew up in Corpus. My mom's side of the family still lives there. You have my sympathy. :p
Take heart, Corpus politics has always been that way. You know that decrepit old ruin just under the harbor bridge? That's the abandoned courthouse. It was abandoned in 1975 and STILL has not been torn down.

I lived in corpus for a year while in flight school, and I about kissed the floor when I arrived back in Texas after being out of state for a while. Never had a problem with the city, it reminded me of a larger but watered down version of my hometown in the rio grande valley.

Yeah, I can hear the crickets chirping already.
Ok, it is a town northwest of the City of El Paso. My town stops at the New Mexico border on the north AND west,… we are quite literally crammed into the corner of the state.
TRIVIA: While the whole rest of the Great State of Texas enjoys Central Standard Time, we forgotten few in the extreme western tip suffer in the Mountain Time Zone.
TRIVIA (continued): I am enclosed, surrounded, and cut off! I got Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the north and west,… and the Franklin Mountain range cutting me off from the rest of Texas to the east. … no laughing please.

Not surprised in the least. I'm quite sure that is a concerned group of citizens wanting to turn it into some trendy something-or-other to attract tourists, a tax increase would be needed of course. They probably want to name it after a dead latino singer.

Well the problem is that there are several businesses who wish to renovate it and make it into something else. City doesn't want to because the old fogies here are making a stink out of it, similar to the T-head development Landrys proposed a few years ago

Of course. How bad was the damage?
When I moved there, SPID was only a freeway from Crosstown to Airline. The rest was a divided roadway with traffic lights, etc.. Al Capone's old boat was docked at the L-head, and the building on the bay side of Shoreline and Ennis Joslin was a GREAT seafood place. I wish I could remember the name.
We drove DARK, DARK blue cars with only a badge on the door and dual bubble gums on the roof. Our uniforms were the light blue shirt with "officer pink" pants. The causeway to Portland was 2 lanes in each direction with no shoulders, and a stalled car or minor accident was a code three run.
We were issued model 15 S&W .38s out of the academy, and could upgrade to a .357 magnum when you made probation. We had one car we called R2D2 because it had a spotlight mounted on the lightbar that was stuck up and looked like R2D2 sitting there. It was remote controlled from the console.
I think about 1988 or so we got the white paint jobs with the stripes on the cars. In 1988 those who passed a transition course and paid for their own could carry the Beretta 92FS (I was in the first transition class). In about 1990 we switched to 800 trunked radios (GE). When I left in 1992 there were still no MDTs or computers in the cars.
In about '88 or '89 we switched to a medium blue pant.
All that water and CCPD had no boats. Railroad tracks ran along Holly Road, which was two lanes as was Saratoga.
Good times...................

I was born in 88. Wow that was a long time ago.
I was pretty young still and I caught the last days of the RR tracks off of Holley...none of them are left but the ol mudbridge off of the Kennedy Cossway is still there.
Well, ol Parkdale Plaza is nothing more than an eyesore now. Nothing but a pawn shop and a dollar store left in it.
Bout two weeks ago the old Dallas Nightclub caught fire...but the CCFD managed to "save" the building. Knocked out power to the entire complex though. Walmart wanted to knock it all down and build a store there, but the HOA and Sutherlands sued them. Don't know what happened to the plans though....right now the building stands as is condemned.
PRetty much CC is dying. Sunrise mall is a joke and has about 15% of the stores occupied. Only dealerships in town is One ford and one GM dealership with a Nissan and a bunch of preowned. No competition in the city no more.

I'll have to take you up on that fishing trip soon. But, not until it's no longer 105 degrees every day.
There's a lake down here that supposedly does really well for Redfish. I thought that Redfish were a salt water only fish. Apparently not. I'm going to check it out this fall. If you're interested, let me know. Plus, I really want to wet my fly line in the Guadalupe River just as soon as we get a bit of rain. The river is almost dry.

If I remember correctly, you'll be in Corpus Christi. That's pretty close to me. Look me up in Outlook and let me know when you're in the area.
I went through Corpus Christi a few weeks ago. I gotta tell you, San Antonio is about a million times nicer.
Texas is a good place to live. The cost of living is low. The people are nice. The food is ridiculously good. The barbeque and Mexican will knock your Aunt Connie's socks off. That's why I'm on a diet right now. I gained about 10-15 pounds in the four months that I've live here.
Big, I bought a house on Long Island about 4 years ago. For $380,000, I got a 1300 square foot cape house, built in 1939. I spent damn near every weekend fixing the house up. My taxes were just under $9,000 per year.
In contrast, I just went into contract on a brand new 3,300 square foot house. I got it for $180,000. My taxes will be under $3,000. Life is good.

BIG needs to get back into shape, hopefully this move to CC is the kick in the *** he needs. BIG resided in Texas for 7 years & left a little over 7 years ago. Guess Texas went to shiiiii without the BIG SEXY one.
