Hello again,
After being inspired by a previous thread, I was wondering what Law Enforcement Exploring was like in the "old-days". By "old-days" I mean pre-1990. I know there is at least one member here who was an explorer in those days, but these questions are open to anyone who "explored" in that time period.

Were uniforms from the past different than they are now?
Is there any difference in equipment?
Is there any difference in events (event type, duties, etc.)?
What were ride-alongs like? (I know back in the day, some things happened that probably should not be repeated...so whatever details you can give would be appreciated. ;) :p)

Thanks again!

Depends on the agency.

I've heard a number of stories about explorers from back in the day, INCLUDING those from my previous advisor. The overall theme seems to be more comraderie with officers, less worry about liability, thus explorers being more involved. But a lot was just the same, training at meetings, traffic control at fairs, ride-alongs, station maintenance activities, competitions.

We had t-shirts that said PIGS Post 601 on them.

Equipment ? WHAT equipment ?

We worked some street fairs , mainly on the upper level of a parking garage so kids wouldn't throw stuff down on the people below.

We also cruised the " circuit " in our town in our own cars and would radio to an advisor any illegal activity we saw. We carried empty beer cans with us and woud pull up next to another car and raise our cans as if to toast them. If they did the same , we would radio it in. One time to make it look good, they pulled ALL of us over and we all got in " trouble".

I rode a few times , nothing outrageous happened. One officer liked to flip the lid over on the air cleaner so when he got on it , the car made some significant induction noise from the 4 barrel carb.

I was a Police Explorer 1974-78.

I am still in touch with 2 of the 3 advisors that we had. We even had a little Explorer get together last summer.
