ALPENA -- A traffic crash killed an Elk Rapids man who recently was hired to be a Presque Isle County sheriff's deputy.
Brandon Christopher Soule, 24, died Wednesday when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle on M-32 near Alpena, said Sgt. Mike Oliver, of the state police post in Alpena.
Preliminary findings indicate Soule pulled into the path of the vehicle, Oliver said. He died at the scene.
Soule, a 2002 graduate of Elk Rapids High School, was hired by the sheriff's department about three weeks ago, said Nick Murray, a friend since the two were high school sophomores.
He returned about five months ago from a 15-month tour of duty in Iraq with the Army National Guard, during which he served as part of the military police, Murray said, and had at least two months left of his enlistment period.
But his dream always was to serve in law enforcement.
"Everyone who's ever met him always knew he wanted to be a cop," Murray said. "He wasn't selfish at all. He was always about other people."
Soule moved to Rogers City, where the department is based, a week before he started work, and had purchased the motorcycle "to save on gas," Murray said. Soule was off-duty when the crash occurred.
State troopers are investigating.
