Well, I currently work corporate security (it's not as glamourous as I make it sound LOL) and I am in the application process to be a TSA screener which is just as glamorous but it is $3.25 more an hour with better benefits. Plus I have the opportunity to trasnfer to Florida if I work out good which is my ultimate goal.

Great idea. And don't knock the SG people. I worked in our Transit unit for a few months as a supervisor and got to know one of the private SG supervisors who were hired by the transit authority to provide unarmed security on the trains. This bloke used to be a senior corrections officer. On day shift I used to go and stand at the barrier with him while he pointed out the crooks he used to handle in our labour prison....and then I'd go and do the intel reports.

It's sad that Brits are so against arming their law enforcement officers and for years expected bobbies and other LEO's to handle gun and knife armed criminals, rogues, thieves and other trash with a club/baton.
Going by reports, they've become a little more lenient, but still have a long way to go.
To my knowledge every transit officer in the US is a bonafide and certified police officer, having arrest empowerment and authorized to carry a weapon/gun to enforce the law.

Not all. My last job was with a transit agency. We were contracted to transit through a private security company. However, we were armed and pretty well trained. We had armed, unarmed, fare enforcement, and revenue divisions. We did work with county deputies, but they were county first, transit second. As I was leaving, there were murmers of replacing the security and deputies with a transit police department. I'll believe that when I see it.
You are correct though. Any agency that has a certain amount of mile of rail must have a protective service, whether it be through an in house police department, contract police services, armed security, or a mix of the three.

You know what's really sad Bill? The cops themselves don't want to be armed. I don't get it but there you are.
The security bloke I used to talk to was a mine of info. Here transit is a division of the police and not separate but I didn't see a problem in keeping a useful liaison.

I worked in retail Loss Prevention for 11 years-beginning in 1983. I saw a lot of changes in that relatively short period of time-in pay and job description. I worked for Elder- Beerman's Dept stores in Ohio-first in the Dayton area, then transferred up to the Toledo area-for 5 1/2 yrs-then went t Lion Department Stores for 6 more years. I quit in 1994 to stay home full-time with the kids I was starting to have.(lol) Prior to starting the loss prevention career, I had almost 2 years experience as a police officer. Now-at 46 yrs old-with my 4 sons being teen-agers-I am an EMT and a volly firefighter in Washington State, as well as a licensed amateur radio operator.
