The search is on for new Michigan State Police troopers

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (02/17/08)--A statewide recruitment effort is under way to beef up the state's law enforcement agency.

The Michigan State Police are looking for more than 100 men and women to be apart of the 121st Trooper Recruit School that will start this fall.

Trooper Rod Smith says they are looking for "highly motivated individuals that are very honest and that have integrity." He added that recruits also need to be hardworking.

If you are 21 years of age with a high school diploma or GED, clean driving record and criminal history -- the department will take care of the rest.

"Our recruit school is in Lansing," Smith said. "It's about 20 to 22 weeks and it's a military type regiment -- very physical and very demanding."

But it also very rewarding. The starting salary for a trooper is about $41,000.

The new group will be added to the 1,000 Michigan State Police troopers already on the road. They'll be spread out in posts across the state.

Smith adds that new recruits will start out working the road. They will take complaints and write tickets among other responsibilities.

Smith has 8 years with the department and he's proud to be able to serve and protect.

"It's not a job it's a career," Smith said. "Every day is a challenge and everyday something new is going on. You come to work and you just don't know what's going to happen and that's a lot of fun."

No doubt! I've got 10 years with Customs and I'm making a base of $66,862... plus our overtime is straight double time! So, come join CBP! We have a much easier job and we don't get shot at! :)

If you hire on CBP as a GS-5 then by 20 years (assuming you don't make supervisor and just stay an officer) you'll be making around $75,000. Make Supervisor somewhere along the lines and you'll add about $10K to that. Or, go as an 1811 S/A and you'll be making a ton more than that being they are journeyman 12-13 I think.

Do you have to buy your own bubble light and hood fin since the state is having financial problem?

With 7 years (top step) and a masters in CJ here you're at a little over $90K. That's if you do not promote, and if you don't live near Boston you can live pretty good on one income. I'd imagine anywhere near Detroit the cost of living is pretty high for the troopers there.
