Does anyone have good suggestions or online resources on how to train a house dog. I've never seen a house dog with the same level obedience as K9's. Basically I was wondering what obedience techniques are used when doing the initial obedience training on K9's (before you get into tracking, drug detection, etc).

Leersburg has a great basic obedience video it like four hours long and goes through each step.
Go to a schutzhund club, it's the best place to start learning.

Obedience is just something you need to work at. It's not something that just happens. Try 15 minutes twice a day (morning and night?) No longer than15 minutes and always end on a positive note.
This comming from the guy who can't get his Golden to obey the recall command :D

I have a feeling there is a little more behind your thread that meets the eye..but excellent advice I am personally not too keen on DIY DVD format I think there are too many variables. I would look around for a good dog club that can give you a one to one.....
Obedience is the hub of the training wheel that hold it together, until you have mastered even basic obedience please don't move on to anything else.......BP348 is quite right, and I don't somehow believe he has no recall?........:)

Depending on the breed of dog you own training your dog is generally a give and take process.I have rottwielers. These dogs are highly inteligent and are easil trained. Most of the time just work on one command at a time.To start with sit you MUST offer a reward when command is obeyed ie.cookie or doggie treat.to get you dog to sit gently pull up om the collar while pushing down on the hind or rear area at the same time stating sit, sit, sit.one command is obeyed praise the dog and give the treat.

It all boils down to repitition. You have to keep at it, if you slack the dog will also. All in all every dog is different and as such every training session will be different. You have to tailor your training towards your dog.
As for BP348, he has no recall, but his dogs are real nice. :)
And Cherokee nothing personal but if you give a command 3 times before enforcing it all your are teaching your dog is to count. That shows him he does not have to do it until the third command.
"A reward to a dog is like a paycheck to a human and you are the paymaster. You must ensure that he is paid on time and in the correct amount for work given."
All reward and corrections must be done right away. If you wait 30 seconds the dog has already forgot what it's for.
Another very good website for pet dogs is Sitstay.com they are more pet oriented than Leerburg.

DCF... +1 Sitstay is very informative.
Personally I train the way North Patrol explained. My dog only receives water and shelter for free. Everything else is worked for. Before she eats, plays we do some simple obedience, article search, etc.
Like all the others have said, all dogs are not the same. Just find what best works for you.
My personal piece of advice would be... Your lead is your extended hand. you can coach and also discipline with it. Your lead work is a direct result of your off lead discipline and obedience. Treats are good, I personally would switch from treats to praise as soon as I could though. Treat your pooch after he gets through from outside, not before or during. DONT discipline your dog for using bathroom indoors. You missed it. Try to catch him next time. Praise/treats will win this problem for you a lot faster than punishment. besides thats just wrong. One last thing CRATE TRAIN.
