Well, I've finally come out of the dark ages. :p I got an MP3 player for Christmas. Nothing fancy. Just a cheap SanDisk Sansa Clip. I have absolutley no idea of where to download songs from, other than Napster. I definately want to do it legally, so I'm willing to pay for service if it's not an outrageous price. Where do those of you that download get your music from?

Thanks, Valor. Does anyone know anything about this site:

The "Legal" section confuses me a bit.

I own or did own an original cd/tape/record of every song on my External Drive. ;)
How can you prove the purchase/ownership of a mp3 over the Internet, to the RIAA's satisfaction, a few years later??
I've just always wondered that....

I use iTunes and know that it has a shop attached. I know that you can buy iTunes cards with a set dollar amount and purchase songs from the site "legally"
And Creeker...
We had an orientation tour for training a few weeks back and went to our Property Office. The SGT there was explaining how (amongst other things) when found burnt CD's/DVD's are handed in or seized as exhibits etc, they are never returned to owner as they are considered illegal.
I coudn't be bother bringing it up, but I immediately thought about CD's burnt from legally downloaded music, or even home videos put onto DVD etc. No-one checks them, they are just destroyed!!!
That would be real nice if it was your collection of family photos that were stolen and found by Police then destroyed.

I use Wal-Mart music downloads. It's something like $0.88 per song. It will add a tab into your Windows Media Player to allow you to shop straight from there.

I use www.gomusic.ru it's a Russian site and is excellent value for money. i've been with the site for a couple of years now and as yet haven't had my credit card details used in any petrol stations in Kazakstan or had any horses heads pinned to my frontdoor, so i'm guessing it's fairly legitimate.
P.S if anyone joins and gives my details I get some free credit ;)

With http://www.mp3fiesta.com/ you have 48 hours after purchase to download the music and you can download it as many times as you need to in that time frame.

Just a semi-random note about re-downloading, etc. Walmart downloads lets you transfer your songs to up to two other computers, BUT... you have to back up your license files to do that.
Windows Media Player 11 REMOVED the functionality that let you do that. Why? I don't know, but they did. Hence why I just got done rolling back from WMP 11 to WMP 10.

I want to as well but the hardware is waaay more expensive than it should be because Apple is essentially its own monopoly. I may go Linux.

I had problems with Walmart downloads... I don't remember what the deal was, all I know is I lost $10 trying to get a Charlie Daniels Album from them and haven't gone back to them ... one reason I prefer the cd in my hand.
I had no trouble with a few other places, though.
My kids got me a small MP3 player for Christmas. I have a lot of music on my computer that I've had forever, and I've already filled up the player (I told you it was small).
I am definitely going to get another one very soon, but I'm not sure which I want to go with. Both of my boys have a Zune that they got for Christmas and it's 30 gig and I may just get one for myself, but I'm not sure about the others that are out there (IPod, etc.).
Any recommendations?

My neice got a 30 gig Zune and right after she got it it was obsolete, because the bigger ones came out for the same price.
I'm not an Ipod fan... I hate anything with an Apple on it except Motts.... :o
I wont Load Realaudio on my computer, either.
I'm not a big mp3 player aficianado. Grain of Salt = Creeker

I'm sure mine is sufficient, but I did want something that would hold more music. The 30 gig Zune would probably be way too much for me, as I wouldn't watch movies or videos on it, and I just don't have that much music to fill the player. But I really would like to have something that holds more than a gig, especially at night while I'm at my mom's in Tennessee.
Thanks for your input, Creeker. :)

Bought my wife the new 8GB Ipod Nano for christams, it's tiny and also plays video.
She loves it and the itunes software is easy to navigate even when you don't use their site to download from.

Kate,
Are you using .wma or .mp3 format? wma is smaller.

The majority are mp3's.
I don't know anything about wma files. Guess it's time to Google. ;)

I swear by iTunes as a program to manage music etc. I love it. I have used it for a few years, and only bought an iPod last week.
80GB by the way...not that size matters. :p:D

On Black Friday, I got my kids a 30 gig Zune each. Toys 'R' Us had them for something like $85. They use them all the time. When my son had an appt. at the dentist, I sat in the waiting room and watched the first hour of Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It sure beat flipping through a 2-year old magazine. My son, Michael wants one with more room, but he'll have to buy that one himself.
I bought myself a 30 gig Zune on Monday that I found on Craig's List pretty cheap, and didn't have to go too far to get it either. I love it. I don't have any movies or pics on there, but there is a ton of music that's been on my computer forever.
When I got it, I had to first get rid of all the Rap crap the college kid had on it, and it's now good to go with all sorts of good stuff: Foo Fighters, Stones, VH, 311, Chili Peppers, STP, Zeppelin, Sinatra, etc., etc., etc.

Nah, not an ELP fan. A classic rock station that I listen to likes them, as is evidenced by how much I hear them. I do, however, have CCR on there. That's good stuff right there! Actually, most classic rock, IMO, is great stuff.

A guy who works with my wife copied a few books he had on tape onto a CD for her. The only problem is that he copied them in MP4...and she can't listen to them in her car player, where she wants them.
I thought that MP4 was a video format
Now she wants a digital player for her birthday, so I guess I'll be looking at Zune's. Did I mention I hate anything with an Apple on it? ;)

MPEG2 and MPEG4 are the video formats. MP3 is the audio format we listen to on digital players and computers. There are other formats but those are the most common.

MP4 is just a container (like a ZIP file). You can put just about anything into it. MP4 usually contains H.264 / AAC or MP4-Video / AAC.
MP4 is sometimes used for audio, but it is usually renamed .m4a when only audio is present.
She will need an AAC player in order to play the M4A files.

I would suggest walmart. They even back up all your songs so if anything happens they will give your money back for all of them or credits. Limewire is pretty good too, as long as you pay per month.
