A Chandler man tried to cash a $28,760 check at a Mesa Wells Fargo branch Wednesday afternoon even though he was 90 percent sure it was fake, police said.

Kristopher Ryan Warren, 30, was arrested at about 4 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Alma School Road in suspicion of one count of forgery.

Warren entered a Mesa Wells Fargo bank and asked a teller to cash the large check. The clerk found that the original check was stolen and copied, police said.

The suspect told police he received the check from an oil company. Warren admitted he never worked for the company but received the check nonetheless, according to the report.

After he was taken to the police station, Warren said he was the 90 percent sure the check was forged.

Warren's brother, a bank manager, warned him not to attempt to cash it, but Warren said the reward outweighed the risk, police said.

I wonder how he is liking the reward now?
