Please excuse my ignorance about the show but what is it about? I've been wanting to watch this show but I wanted to watch it from epsiode 1. I finally got a hold of the dvds from season 1 and I was really turned off at the first 2 episodes. Is this show about crooked cops? Am I wrong?

I guess. Not all of them are crooked, but some of them have different work ethics. Stick with it, you may end up liking it.

But is the main guy crooked?

I've never liked the series - I watched a few episodes in the first couple seasons and I didn't like what I saw.
I think that many cops like this series. They are out there in the trenches day after day. They often become frustrated in the 'revolving door' of justice. They see the hypocracy of the 'justice' system as well.
These cops see the characters in the show, they sometimes secretly wish they could do the things they see in the show.
I think that shows like this, and movies like Training Day, do a great deal of harm to the image of police offers in the eyes of the public as professionals

Yeah, but the Soprano's doesn't necessarily portray my ethnicity in the best of light, but I would hope that most would know it is fiction.

.... I would hope that most would know it is fiction.
Maybe I don't give people enough credit ..... but I believe that many people would vote for Martin Sheen for President because they liked the television show The West Wing.
I think that the line between reality and fiction is a pretty thin one in the mind of many people.
If a person is already pre-disposed to believe that the police are crooked, then watching shows like these just serves to re-enforce those feelings.

Stick with it I think you will like it.
I was also turned off in the first few episodes but like watching it now.

Pretty good advice being given here... Quite honestly I felt exactly the same as you did. It actually took me 5 years to actually get into the show but now I cannot get enough of it. Keep watching and you will more than likely get a warm and fuzzy for it.
great series
its about a group of cops who set up a drug dealer "once". they say they will only do it once to get some established rep within the department but it becomes a slippery slope.

Great series. A lot of folks on here love it. I love the series because the main character (Vic Mackey) is a good/bad guy. Sometimes you love him and sometimes you love to hate him. The show has good cops and bad cops. The show shows how easy it could be to cross the line and how difficult it is to cross back over (slippery slope). Try it. You'll like it.

that is the one of many key themes in the shield - its easy to cross the line "for a good reason" from good to bad but its much harder to move from bad to good.
by far my favorite show on TV - its so werid how you end up rooting for vic and hoping that he doesn't get caught by IAD or the brass. based on the plot u would think you would root against him

Remember when he was on the Commish and still had a little bit of hair left. He definitely looks better bald.
