Yes, police can be fired. In most places there are numerous safeguards in place to help prevent political persecutions. Sometimes it can be difficult to fire the people who actually need it.

I live in a state that is referred to as "right to work" and we have no union protections and it is relatively easy to fire someone. My agency has fired probably 5 or 6 officers in the last year. I can honestly say though that they brought it on themselves and that they were justifiable actions.

Most discipline in police work here is progressive in nature. The first time you get in trouble you get a verbal reprimand, then next a written one that stays in your file. Then you start getting suspended. If you do something really major they may skip up to the suspension or firing if it is really bad. Eventually if all this discipline isn't working you'll get fired. One of the guys who got fired in the last year was one of those cases. What he got fired for would not have gotten most others fired. But he had been a consistent problem with lots of reprimands and suspensions so finally they fired him.

In my area, it is extremely hard to fire a police officer.

Same here. Our Civil Service hiring procedures make it harder to get hired and harder to get fired.

ONly cops who have been fired from my department since I've been there were for lying when asked about something they did. They wouldn't have been fired for the actions themselves but they lied

NYPD its real easy to get fired in your first 2 years until your off of probation. NY is a "work at will" state meaning an employer or employee can terminate employment at any time, with or without reason, with or without notice.

After 2 years its a little more difficult to get fired, but if the job wants you off, they'll get you off. The patrol guide is about 8" thick of rules & regulations.

In Washington and where I was in Alaska, you could be easily fired during your first year while on probation. Once you were off probation though it is a whole lot harder. But like was mentioned already, if administration wants you gone....you'll go.

Therefore there is no civil service protection in small depts.

The small Sheriff's Office I work for is one of these.

I work at the "pleasure of the sheriff".

Of course, since I have been here for 6 years, I must be doing something right
