Hello everyone
my name is Mike and I was just wondering if you could give me some advice... I currently have a 1 year old male Presa Canario which I was beginning to Schutzhund work with... Unfortunatly I feel that he lacks the drive that I am looking for (this does not mean all presa's dont have drive, some have great amount of prey drive and can excel in both PP and sprot, not like a mal or GSD ofcourse)... although I love this dog I think he will be better off with my sis and her boyfriend because he is just a really great pet, he loves the whole family including children and my parents shepherd, they are the best of buds... she does have to put the teeth to him sometimes tho :)... so ya i think he will be happier as a family pet than a working dog
Now just recently i got excepted into the Natural Resource Law Enforcement program at my college (which was a hard course to get into) so this was the first big step in my goal to become a canine handler for the Ministry of Natural Resources... So my question is this, I have an opportunity to own a pup out of a KNPV 2 (riot dog) from Holland, this has really got my intrest going because the mals from the KNPV are in my opinion some of the best working dogs out there... i know they are alot of work and I am prepared to commit full time to working this dog to its full potential... Now my question is do you think it is a good idea to begin training dog before you actually get into the force?... do you think it would look good on a resume to say you have experience working malinois to certain title (insert title here)... i have spoken to a couple k9 handlers for the police force and they said yes forsure, it will give you an advanatge over other people and you will already have a good grasp on what it takes to own and train a true working dog... what are your thoughts on my way of thinking. Thank you for your time
Take care,
Mike
