Forgive me if this is a repost or in the wrong section. I did try searching first. I was watching future weapons on the discovery channel last night, and they did a segment on a new body armor called Dragon Skin. I was wondering if any of you have seen this in the field yet and what your thoughts are.

I saw the show last week. I don't know of anyone that is using it. It is VERY impressive, but the only question I have is the wearbility of it. How much bigger and how flexible is it?

I'm willing to trade a little flexability for the added protection from assault rifles.

But the real question is how much is it?

From the testing they did on the segment i saw. I it suppose to be more flexible then what the current LEO's wear. As far as price, I did a google search out of curiosity and found that the standard vest is approximately $2000.

No way can it be more flexible than "soft body armor."

It appears to be more suited to a tactical vest than every day use.

Yes and no.

The "Dragon Skin" vest is designed to replace the current hard body armor (such as the hard, heavy ceramic plates) that are primarily used by SWAT/ERT/Military and worn on the outside of a uniform.

The body armor used by officers on normal duty is considered a soft body armor and is worn under the uniform.

The Dragon Skin armor would be much heavier and more rigid than soft body armor.

This must have been the part I misunderstood. My bad. Thanks for the correction. :o

Do any of you LEO's frequently wear those ceramic ballistic plates along with your soft armor? I've heard from officers in the past that they are too heavy/hot to wear all the time. I would think they would be advantageous, although probably rarely ever needed.

According to the manufacturer of dragon skin, those vests wear like level III-A soft armor. I'm not sure if that is the SWAT type vest you were describing. The picture showed a vest rolled up into a ball and it looked like soft body armor.

I believe you should read the entire data info for the “Dragon Vest.” The one shown on the Discovery channel was a tactical vest, not an undergarment vest.

Below is a statement right from the website concerning the Level III.

"The SOV-2000™ Level III, with our large standard tactical front and back panel configuration weighs 16.5 lbs. and varies depending on the level of coverage needed. The SOV-2000™ is manufactured with a ceramic composite."*

No thanks on wearing this thing for everyday use during an Arizona summer. And, I would have to see it to believe it concerning flexibility compared to kelvar vests.

Now, on the other hand, if I was getting prepared to make a high risk entry or was tasked with foot patrol in downtown Baghdad, this looks like a damn good product.

When that thing took a grenade and it didnt even penetrate the inner fabric, I was sold on its durability. The military needs these NOW.
