Every so often, I check the registry to see who's living next door. We haven't done so since we moved, but I did it this morning......I have ten offenders that live within five miles of me. Three live within a mile. Of course, this is provided they registered with the correct address.
Our local registry allows you to search for specific individuals or just do a blanket search. We also have full name, addresses, and photos to go with the file. Once, I checked out the registry in the town I went to high school. I was surprised, to say the least. I was familiar with some of the faces. The registry in that particular town had the photos open with the list of names. Here, you have to click on an additional link.
I encourage everyone to look at the register in your area. Here's a helpful link:

What a fantastic idea, however in England this would be banned by civil rights groups who would say we are breaching their human rights to privacy.
What about the rights of the people they assaulted I hear you ask.......they have none.

I did this when we moved into our new house. I try to do it about every 6 mths. I also found out who was around my kids school, bus stop and day care. When my kids go to Grandpa/Grandma, I run that zip too.
I know offenders are not supposed to be within so many feet of a school or daycare, but you never know.
Its not a perfect system, but it helps.
Thanks for the reminder IG!! My daughter just started kindergarten and I haven't got to it yet.
Of course, NYS isn't on that site.
I can tell you where one sex offender was - about 20 feet away from my front door!!! Of course, now he is in our state bed and breakfast. :D
I saw that Stump - JC got another 40 yesterday? He'll be an old man *if* he ever leaves jail.
He'll be out when he is 78!!! And apparently he spent 1/2 hour telling the judge he needs more legal training and that his defense attorney that he was an idiot. LOL...
And he still has at LEAST 5 more trials to go!! Next one starts Oct 12.. I think I'm gonna go and wave to him from the back of the courtroom. :D I don't know which one I am testifying in yet though...

I did this once RP put it back up on the website, and in the 2 Sq. miles that I live in there are 35 sex offenders...One lives right down the street....
Though I know that Reno 911 is not that popular here...I still think that the one episode that showed the Blonde Deputy taking a sex offender around his neighborhood (sp) so that he could inform his neighbor's (sp) himself, and she could see to it that he did this, was a great idea...They don't do that here.
This is something I know much about, to much about. Here are some facts that I have here on paper and I will try and back them up with online matreial (sp).
Sex offenders are more likly to NOT re offend as with other offenders.
Murderers do not have to register. I personally know of a murderer that works right on Waikiki beach. I know another that works in New Orleans and these Murderers do not have to register. Would you like to know if a murderer lived in your neighborhood?
In Oregon all one has to do to become a sex offender is be in the wrong place at the wrong time. someone i know walked by a woman and his hand touched her rear, now he has to register as a sex offender for at least ten years to life. I know of a guy who was two year older than his GF, they met in school, he graduated and was prosecuted with a Rape 3. He married his girlfriend and has kids. Oregon tried to place everybody on the Internet just think about this guys and his kids. I myself was FORCED to plea guilty to a rape 3 because this 15 year old girl was using me as an excuse while running away to her boyfriend, now I have to register as a freak.
I agree with the law but try and find my name anywhere. I hate sex offenders, I had to sit in a room with these freaks for 9 months untill they finally kicked me out for telling these guys they were worse than scum. I have also seen sex offenders who are truly sorry and wish to remain in treatment. Other offenders , thiefs, murderers, drug dealers and so on most likely Will offend again but do not have to register. I have so many friends and familly and they know I was shafted, they also know I never did like kids and am not one to have ever wanted to hold a baby saying "how cute" but my friends and everyone that knows me are confident they could leave their 15 year old daughters alone with me without harm or anything else, i won't even give them ciggeretts (sp).
Just remember to read the charge, some may be really BS.
The sheffif of this county I was shafted in just might be going down for murder just to let you know how this county works.
How can you be forced to plead rape 3 if you didn't do anything illegal? Was your representation incompetent? Did the 15yo lie?

Talia I happen to think Reno911 is hilarious. I liked that episode where the blonde deputy took the sex offender around. Especially when the sex offender asked her what time she got off work. LOL
There's not any sex offenders near BUT there is a guy about 5 houses down that exposed himself to an 8 year old girl 2 houses down from me. It won't be long he'll probably be registering. And I better not see him do anything anywhere near me or I'll...
Yes she lied. Yes my Lawyers were incompetent. I took out a mile of aluminum pipe from the woods, theft is what it's called, I called it forest reclaimation... They used that as leverage, "we have you cold on the theft of the pipe and you will do a year and a half at oregon state, but if you plea guilty to the rape 3 we'll give you 36 months probation". I finished the probation in 30 they let me go early for several reasons.
1. I was setup to do a case specific polygraph. The questions were to be if I had sex with this girl. Among the others were if I had talked to a certain detictive about the case before I was charged, he lied and said I didn't.
So yes I did break the law with the theft of the pipe.
Some heavy stuff is about to go down in this county about their corruption so maybe things will change.....
The problem with the sexual offender registry is that the person who follows that law is the person who has repented somewhat. I mean, really... the person who is going to re-offend is going to register and warn everyone???

Sex offender registries are great. We had a lady call us one day and advise us where we could find a sex offender we had warrants for after he failed to register his new address. It turns out she was looking for new child care for her kids and found a woman that watches kids in her home, luckily before leaving her kids there she did some checking and found that the woman's husband who helps with the child care business was a sex offender and was wanted by the state police.

Can someone tell me the difference between Level I, II, and III. Is it the age of the victim or the severity of the attack? (like Level III is flashing and Level I is rape).
I was also wondering, if the victim is a child, is it the law anywhere that you can't plea bargain?

I don't give a rats *** if they have been in treatment, statistics prove most do not rehabilitate.
I just read that our county has 246 registered offenders, our county is 526 sq. miles. good grief
Show me the stats. I hate to have to say this but some never offended in the first place. Darcy Baker, who is in charge of the Clackamas county sex offender unit will tell you that stats prove SOs do not re offend. I'm trying to find that info online.
I would sue the girl if she lied. That's just wrong.
I don't have case cites, but I'm from a cop family and my uncle had been a corrections officer for more than 20 year. His experience shows that SO who offend against adults are not as likely to reoffend and those who commit against children.
Most cops know that sex offences against adults are generally about power, whereas sex offences against children are generally about sex.

Zen - I'm sure there are some that are innocent. Just as with any crimes - injustice does happen. People DO get set up, framed, etc. Most offenders do not rehabilitate there are probably a few who do.
A friend's son was convicted of raping a 16 year old girl, he is now out of prison but is on the list. He was innocent, she set him up and I t hink everyone knew it, but they locked him up anyway. For those individuals I do have compassion. The others - I don't.

While it is true that some sex offenders are listed as such for merely pissing on a tree...however I hate to argue that there is a difference between this offender and the "other" offenders...(And Zendik I am not speaking to you here just in general) Sex offenders are very hard to rehabilitate. (I am in a class for corrections right now...this is all that we talk about....) Maybe not so much as phedophiles (sp) but, going back to another thread...If they were capable of rehabilitation...then why are we, when they finish serving their time in jail, throwing them back into the system by placing them in Mental Facilities...And I know, I know ...Working on that link Zander. :)
Yes there are monsters out there and I had to sit in that stinking room with them for 9 months. The rule was to be honest and I was honest on wanting to throw a few of them out the window from the 9th floor. I agree 100% with the registration law and would prefer if multiple offenders got casterated. One guy in treatment had 36 victims in 8 states and was running around free. When is enough enough... I feel sick just thinking about it and had to pay for private counsling to handle that whole situation. I say if an adult does some of the things I heard these guys do they should have the offending body part cut off or have justice served by the male members of the victims familly.
Since my ordeal my so called victim has tried to do the same again but it didn't go far because they wanted a polygraph and she wouldn't do it. This is why I hate meth, she was on it and probally still is.
