Its called cherry eye. A dog has 2 tear ducts on each eye(one on the bottom, one on the top). When a tear duct gets dislodged it shows up in the corner of the eye and causes drainage.

My Malinois has just been diagnosed with this. The vet said they would have to do surgery to tact it back into place. They say they do a lot of this type of surgery, but not so much on Mals. He's 7 months. I'm a lil worried just because it is surgery.

Anybody else had anything like this happen to their dogs?

I'm not a cop, but my dog did have eye surgery almost 2 years ago. He was 6YO at the time. I was quite worried, plus it was his blue eye (one blue, one brown). He had a small growth on the upper lid that looked like a sty a person would get, which had to be removed and sent for biopsy. Everything came out fine - benign growth - and his recovery was remarkable. After, I just had to put drops in 3 times per day, plus some ointments, and keep it clean. I think the general anastheisa was worse on him than the sugery, as he was groggy and not quite himself for a few day afterward. Of course, the worst part of the entire ordeal (for him, anyway) was the plastic lampshade he had to wear for almost a month afterwards. He was actually depressed! The little twerp kept figuring out a way to rub his eye on furniture and things even with the collar on, so his stitches kept getting ripped out and he had to wear it much longer than he should have!

I bet your Mal will pull through just fine. Dogs are pretty tough animals - it's us owners who are weak in the heart! (And the pocketbook - that surgery alone set me back $1,200  )

Yes, my small Shepoo has had it twice, the vet told us he could remove it, however the was always the chance that it would come back. Not that money was a problem but because she was in no pain we decided to leave it.

yeah, My vet said it might pop out again, but he was born with two and they would like him to keep them. I will probably go ahead with the surgery, It seems to make the eye drain a lot. I just don't want it to pop out again, and again. Then I guess we will have to take it out.
