I received a fine for a failure to appear on a fix it ticket. The judge dismissed the other charges which were for insurance and a broken headlight. I asked for community service the first court date and he said to wait till the next court date and try to get the headlight fixed. I got insurance but could not raise the money for the headlight so on the second court date he dismissed both charges and then I went to the clerk and to my surprise I had a 556.00 fine whichI was told was for the FTA. This to me is ridiculous for a fix it ticket. that I didn't even know I had to go to court for in the first place or I would have as evidence by the fact that I did go when I was notified.
What can I do ?? I cannot afford payments. I have no income at present.

Sorry to sound harsh but you wont get any sympathy here. Get a job. If you were driving you obviously had money for gas. It was at night, so you probaly weren't looking for a job. On the back of Citiations it gives instruction on appearing for court, you should of read it.

You can obviously afford to run a PC otherwise you wouldn't be here so sell that, if it's a friends PC, ask them for the money, after all that's what friends are for.

"Don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine!"

Well, if you don't pay the fine you're liable to get your license suspended, and if you get caught driving suspended-well, there's a bigger problem.
Find some money, pay the fine.

How much would a broken headlight have cost? $10?
Even one of those new-fangled $200 headlight assemblies can probably be found at a junk yard.
McDonalds pays $6-$10 per hour, and they're always hiring around here

So you were driving around with a unservicable vehicle, AND no insurance? Here in NC you would've gone to jail for no insurance.
How could you not afford to fix a headlight? At worst you can buy a pair of the external headlights (that you attach to your bumper) for around $20. ONE trip to Autozone would've netted you that.
You're also lucky you weren't arrested for the FTA as soon as you set foot in the courthouse. The back of the ticket is made for the simplest and most ignorant people...you can work a PC but you can't read the back of a pink-slip?
What CAN you do? Sell the vehicle, or get a loan for the FTA fine. Get a job. Don't try the "nobody's hiring", McDonalds, Wal-mart, Hardee's...all places like that are constantly hiring, they have terrible turnover, which means they ALWAYS need people.
What WILL you do? You'll whine and moan about the terrible, terrible police and court system...that are so unfair (even after giving you 3-4 2nd chances). You won't pay the fine, a warrant will be signed. When you randomly get pulled over one night, and that warrant comes up, you'll whine and moan about how unfair it is that you got arrested in front of your friends/family. You'll claim you had no idea the warrant was there, and that there was NO REASON for you to be handcuffed.
Here's a quarter, call someone who cares.
Go to the court and talk to the clerk about paying the fine in payments.
Explain that you are not working. They will want you to get a job.
You will probably be on unsupervised/supervised probation while you are doing so. It gives you some incentive to get it paid off.
The worse thing you can do is NOTHING.
Because NOTHING is usally followed by a WARRANT.

Well it's nice to know that arrogance is alive and well in the law enforcement community. Gee it's funny but I thought I could get some honest feedback on this site, but didn't expect it to be so incredibly offensive and rude. I am an RN and if I talked to my patients the way you have talked to me here I would be fired.
I never said I never worked just not presently and it's none of your business why. All I really wanted to know was what options I had left. I know I have to pay my fine. I don't feel it was fair and we all know in LA what fines are really about. I didn't appreciate all this rudeness but then we all have to aask ourselves why we felt the need to be so rude and unprofessional?
Thank God the judge in this matter was not like any of you.
