Jailer killed in bed after fugitive's capture
Published on: 06/17/06
MACON — A Telfair County jailer was found early Friday fatally shot in bed with his wife and infant son who were not harmed, authorities said.
Investigators believe Roscoe Latrell Harris, 32, of McRae, was killed because he supplied information that led deputies to wanted man Lamont Armstrong, Telfair County sheriff Jimmie Williamson said.
Armstrong, 24, of McRae, was wanted on several charges including possession of cocaine and violation of probation. Armstrong, who was arrested on June 9, was related to Harris by marriage.
"He was doing what he needed to do in the line of duty to help us get a fugitive, and it resulted in his death," Williamson said.
Along with Armstrong, Keith Dubose, 21, of McRae, and Shenerica Clark, 19, of Albany, are charged with murder, according to the Telfair County Sheriff's office.
After Harris' death, Williamson said Armstrong communicated from jail that he wanted Harris dead.
Investigators are trying to determine whether money exchanged hands in the killing. Williamson said he expected more arrests but didn't know how many there may be.
"As many as it takes," he said.
