I just got the yellow card back from the "police officer written exam" that I took in late Feb. I passed the test. On the back the box checked off reads the following....
"this is to advise you that you made a qualifying grade on all parts of the examination indicated on the front of this card. Your Grade is: 81.459
As employment vacancies occur, referrals from the eligible register will be made in accordance with Civil Service Rules. Veterans' Preference Included"
My question is... what do they mean by that? should I call them? should I just wait around? Should I move on and apply to another dept while I wait?
If you are familiar with this card please PM me.
The funny thing is that they started another 500 person recruitment drive.
Here is the link if anyone is interested

I am guessing only someone in Miami would really be able to help.
If you are out there hit me up with a PM.

It sounds like they'll call the applicants based on score in order from highest to lowest with veterans preference thrown in as needed. Sounds like you wait. I'd apply elsewhere as well. The more you fish the better your odds are at catching one.

I know how to comprehend what I read. It would mean I wait until employment vacancies occur. What has thrown me off is the 500 applications they started to collect yesterday.
There are other parts of the card that I dont feel like explaining. because it would take all day for me to type it out in a way that would be clear enough. It is easier for someone that knows what I am talking about to answer my question, that is why people from Miami or people that have applied to the City of Miami and have gotten this same card in the mail would be a better at answering this question. Thanks for the effort in trying to help. Hooked on phonics worked for me! :D
If I were you, I'd start putting in applications other places as well. If they are hiring off of an eligibility list based upon test score, 81 really isn't that great. The reason that they are putting another 500 applicants through the initial process is because they want to broaden the applicant pool. That way they can select the top applicants without having to go too far down on the list.

Mxwelch hit it on the head. You don't need to be a Miami PD applicant to know that. Your specific question was "What do they mean by that?". Based on what you stated the card said, I'd say you got your answer. Departments down here take the applicants with the top test scores first, then work their way down. There are many applicants that had 95%+ scores, so you may be waiting awhile. I applied at Miami Dade with a 97% BAT score and had to wait 4 months to get my first letter.

This is exactly the way the process works for the City of Miami PD. They start processing the people with the highest scores and work their way down. Like Patrick said, they need to broaden the applicant pool to get the more desirable candidates. The next class for City of Miami starts some time in July. Their classes have between 30-35 trainees. This is also including trainees from Coral Gables PD. So you can see that it's kinda hard to get in. Calling them will not do you any good. Like the others have said, you should apply to other PD's in the meantime or you can put yourself thru the academy.

So then I will start looking around. I can take the test again after 6 months right? I remember hearing something like that but I also remember it being for people that failed it. Anyone know anything about that?
I dont know how they grade that stuff but there must have been over 400 questions. It was mostly true/false to see if you are a nut job or not. Most of the test had no right or wrong answer. I thought 81 was pretty good, only 19% nutty.
I would put myself thru the academy but that means I cant do anything but that for 6 months and I dont have enough money to not have a job for 6 months and then hope someone hires me.

81 isnt a great score, its good for High school math quiz but you need to place 90 or above to have a great shot at getting in, at least in a decent time frame. In the county I live in, if you dont score a 90 be prepared to wait 2-3 years before an initial contact

That is exactly what I read.
I did not fail the test but I guess I still have to wait 6 months to try and get a better score.
Do you know if they keep the better of the 2 scores? I dont want to take it again and get a worse score and then not be able to use the higher of the 2.
The other thing is that they may not let you test 2 times. If you pass you pass and you are stuck with whatever passing score you have. There might some rule that you can only retake the test if you fail it.
Anyone know anything?

This is your best bet Downtown. Even with a 100% test score, you're not guaranteed anything. It's REALLY competitive down here. Apply, apply, apply. I think there are around 30 different departments in Dade. I applied for MDPD last June! My BI still hasn't been done! The psych and medical would be next, assuming I get that far.

I got a certified letter in the mail today (they spent $4.46 on it :D ) with the time & date for an orientation session at the police station. Looks like 81% isn't so bad after all. I got a 93% on the FBAT and I know 3 languages.
The only reason I mentioned the FBAT is because they want 2 copies of my scores.
If I am lucky the room will be full of those meat-heads I saw at the test 2 months ago. Most of those guys looked like they still sleep in superman underwear in a little race car bed. It might just be all down hill from here.

LOL! That's what I think every time I go for a test or something. Alot of these guys look better on paper then you'd think. Multiple languages help, but don't forget, English is a second language for many in Miami already, so they'll be no shortage of applicants who also habla.
I'm not trying to discourage you, but don't think for one minute that you have no competition out there.

They accept applications 365 days a year. I would never work for
Miami-Dade. They are basically the Sheriffs office of Miami-Dade County.
They have horrible administration, that is why there are 40 other police depts in the county. Lets be serious here for a minute and think about it, does the city of West Miami really need police???? They must have 2 or 3 police cars. West Miami is an old city and it was founded for all the wrong reasons (basically to keep gambling legal because it was outlawed in Coral Gables) that is why it is only 3 or 4 square miles in size.
All these new places like Aventura (1995) Pinecrest (1996) Doral (2000-something) and so on and so on.... they were formed due to the lack of services that the county provides those areas.
Also Miami-Dade is the only county in ALL of the USA to use Q-codes instead of 10-codes or some other form of radio communication. All the City Depts must use this too because they are in the county. When we send cops to other parts of the state to help out with hurricanes or other natural disasters they are always confused.
In FL the Sheriffs uniform is White & Green. All Sheriffs Depts wear White & Green. Miami Dade Police (they don’t call themselves sheriffs) wear some mud brown pants with a lighter mud brown shirt. They also pay a fine to the state every year because of this. They claim it is cheaper to pay the fine than it would be to issue new uniforms to everyone. HOW they think that??...... I don’t know.
I would personally stay away from that Dept.
At the rate things are going, pretty soon the county is going to be divided into 100 little citys with 3 or 4 police cars each and they wont be needed anymore.
Now that I read your comment again, do you mean Miami-Dade Police? Or Miami-Dade College?

+1 all you like.
When you say "Miami-Dade" it can usually mean 3 different things.
The most common use for the term "Miami-Dade" is as the name of MDC formerly known as MDCC or Miami Dade Community College. They dropped the first C because now they offer a bachelors degree in education.
Second, "Miami-Dade" can mean the police dept. They have been known as Metro-Dade or just "Metro" up until just a couple years ago.
When you say "Metro" it can still mean the cops or the bus or the train.
Third, Miami-Dade can mean the actual county that Miami is sitting in. It changed its name from Metro-Dade to Miami-Dade so that tourists dont get confused as to where they are when they land at the airport.
When someone says "I need to go to Miami-Dade" it is understood that they are saying they need to go to the college and not the police station or the actual county.
When someone says "Miami-Dade" is having a job fair, it will 99.99% of the time be understood that the college is having a job fair because they have them every 3 or 4 months. And interestingly enough you can go to the Miami-Dade job fair and sign up for inverviews with Miami-Dade, Miami-Dade or Miami-Dade..... As a cop, a faculty member, or a garbage man.
So again +1 to you.
GO HEAT!

While they do pay a fine to the state because of their uniform choice, White is not the only color EVERY Sheriff's Office in the state uses. I wear Green shirt and Green pants. As does most every Sheriff's Department in this area.
Sheriff's Departments have an option, White or Green for the shirt.

No, as Downtown stated, Miami Dade is the sheriff of Dade County like BSO is the sheriff of Broward County.
There is Miami Dade Police Department:
http://www.miamidade.gov/mdpd/
and the Miami Police department:
http://www.miami-police.org/MiamiPD/MiamiPD/Default.asp
There are also many more Dade County agencies, just like there are many more Broward County agencies.
There are many other Florida sheriff's offices that do not wear green or green and white uniforms. Pasco County wears gray shirts and green pants. Jacksonville (JSO) wears blue uniforms. Collier County wears gray shirts and pants. I believe Bay County wears all black.
Yes, some agencies are better than others. Nobody will argue that. That said, things such as the color of uniform and the type of radio codes an agency uses are petty. If someone is going to base their employment decision on such factors, that's simply asinine. I'm not fond of my agency's patch, however I'm fond of the fact that we're one of the highest paid in the state. Certain things are trivial in the grand scheme of things.
