CBSA officers seize cocaine at Vancouver International Airport
Richmond, B.C., May 18, 2006 — The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at Vancouver International Airport seized 50 kilos of cocaine from two suitcases that arrived on a flight from Mexico.

On May 4, 2006, CBSA officers were conducting airside baggage examinations when they became suspicious of two suitcases. Inside, they found 45 bricks of cocaine weighing approximately 50 kilos. The officers seized the drugs and turned them over to the RCMP’s Drug Section for further investigation.

"This seizure demonstrates the excellent work our officers do on a daily basis," said Chris Argue, Chief of Airside and Special Enforcement Operations. "Stopping smuggling of illegal drugs at our borders plays a big part in making our communities safer."

CBSA officers work in various areas of the airport, including operating as special enforcement teams that search international aircraft, conduct baggage exams airside, and monitor cargo movement from the aircraft to warehouses. The CBSA has special enforcement teams outside the CBSA passenger terminal to examine and monitor baggage and cargo being offloaded from international arriving aircraft.

Last year, CBSA officers in the Pacific Region made over 2,200 drug seizures.

CBSA officers are Canada's first line of defence in protecting Canada from illegal drugs and other contraband. The CBSA is committed to protecting Canada's borders and keeping our communities safe.
