I was pumping gas and some guy in a van pulls up next to me and jumps out with a can of spray in one hand and a plastic plate cover in the other.

He was trying to get me to buy the can for 30 bucks. He showed me some before and afters. He also gave me a card with this website on it because I told him I had no cash on me.

I checked the site out and I am glad I did not buy it because I have never seen any "white vans" like they say in the news clip.

They say in the clip there is no law that says your plate needs to be photogenic, is this true?

I edited the web site. I don't want that company making any profits from anyone on here..Drew

My state's law says you may not obscure your tag with a cover, body part, etc to avoid a camera. I don't think it says anything about a spray.

46.2-716. How license plates fastened to vehicle; altering appearance of license plates.
A. Every license plate shall be securely fastened to the motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer to which it is assigned:

1. So as to prevent the plate from swinging,

2. In a position to be clearly visible, and

3. In a condition to be clearly legible.

B. No colored glass, colored plastic, or any other type of covering shall be placed, mounted, or installed on or over any license plate if such glass, plastic, or other type of covering in any way alters or obscures (i) the alpha-numeric information, (ii) the color of the license plate, (iii) the name or abbreviated name of the state wherein the vehicle is registered, or (iv) any character or characters, decal, stamp, or other device indicating the month or year in which the vehicle's registration expires. No insignia, emblems, or trailer hitches or couplings shall be mounted in such a way as to hide or obscure any portion of the license plate or render any portion of the license plate illegible.

C. The Superintendent may make such regulations as he may deem advisable to enforce the proper mounting and securing of the license plate on the vehicle.

I've seen convictions due to this spray...Depends on who the judge is..

There is a law in NY that you can't have your plate covered with anything.

If you can't tell the spray is there with the naked eye you wouldn't know to enforce it. And since cameras can't take pictures of it they'll never know who to contact when your plate comes through washed out.

This rubbish doesn't work, if it did the whole world would have it:rolleyes: And if that ever happened law and practice would be changed to suit. Not only that but our latest generation cameras don't even flash so.........sorry folks, you break the law and you might just get caught:D

Same here , you can't do ANYTHING to impair or obscure the plate or to make it unreadable. I would cite and let HIM spend HIS $$ to fight it in court.

Hmm....wonder what would happen if you seized the person's plates as evidence until the trial. :)

I swear there's a former cop who's got a website, and he sells this stuff. Along with a whole bunch of other "how to not get caught speeding" things. I'll have to see if I can find that site again...

However I won't post the address... Don't want him profiting...

I'd be quite hesitant about buying anything from a guy who stops random people at gas stations. Scam anyone?

Recently, our local news did the same test with the same products. The results were the same - negative...

We have a couple of freeways here and one in particular has been getting quite a bit of attention. They have installed 8, maybe more, cameras along the freeway to catch those speeding. It's really getting out of hand. People protesting it and blah, blah, blah, blah. Our speed limit is 65mph and the police has stated that they look for people who exceed 70mph. They are already giving them an inch, what more do they want.

IMHO, just don't speed and you won't have to worry about getting a ticket.

Funniest quote ever from one of the stupid "beat a ticket" sites:

"How would you feel if you got a heafty fine tomorrow for driving perfectly sensibly but marginally over the speed limit?"

and my all time favorite:

"We're all adults, we're quite capable of using common sense when driving through built up areas."
If you spent five minutes on the Ask-A-Cop section and this section, you would quickly find the opposite to be true.

As most cops have found out, Common sense is uncommon.

I see people here in town all the time with these strange plate covers that allow you to see the plate when standing / sitting behind the vehicle, but from an angle above the car, as if you were standing directly behind the plate looking down on it- you wuoldn't be able to make out what it says.. its all blurred out. Supposedly since the cameras are all up high, they can't get a good shot of the plate.

I personally don't like having cameras everywhere, it's too 1984ish to me.

In 1990 I had a tinted cover on my rear tag, and got lucky to only get a warning for it. :o Ever since I have only clear covers on my tags. And that is in winter since our tags are steel. Summer I have only black metal frames on our plates. I went to the Roy's sites, and laughed when I read the prices for covers that are the same as what is available at parts stores. And the only protection those claim to provide is theft of the plate or the stickers. :)

I predict that you aren't going to be here very long.

I thought the "better than nothing" comment was rather interesting. Personally, I simply attempt to avoid breaking the law. Saves me the effort of trying to get away with breaking it.

I can recall being hit with radar from one of the sign trailers. Just the display was enough to make me slow down. It was a 35 zone and I was at 46. Since then I made sure to keep an eye on my speed, despite the number of boneheads whom like to think they are qualifying for Daytona or Talledega.;) :p

Here in lil old South Australia, the fine for having an obscured number plate, is more than 3 times than that of just not having your plates on at all.... why would you block the plate when u can just take it off and get away with a $70 fine?!!

Our deptarment is pretty backward though i have to say....
