Im looking for colleges with a good criminal justice program for when i get out of high school. Does anyone here go to SHU? Is it a good school? And how does it prepare you for law enforcement? And is the Criminal Justice portion of the school help you?

I graduated from SHSU in 1999. I was a history major at the time. I didn't take any criminology courses until grad school, but I know quite a lot about the college. Feel free to PM me and I'll answer your questions as best I can.

Well, my opinion of SHSU is that it is a good school. I wouldn't necessarily say that a BA/BS degree in CJ from SHSU would prepare you for law enforcement; however, you will get to learn a lot about the CJ field and network with people who've been in and around it all, not to mention a little name recognition once you graduate. Most of the upper-level CJ programs from SHSU are for which the school is known. It wasn't my first choice, but I'm glad I'm here; I really enjoy it. I'm sure you'd like it, if you're truly interested in law enforcement and don't mind living in a town where the two highest centralized populations are the college and the prison.
Good luck to you.

I will be graduating from Sam Houston in the spring with my bachelors in CJ.
Overall I have had a positive experience with this program, everyone from the CJ advisors, to the proffesors were very helpful.
There were a few prof's that probably shouldnt be teaching CJ there... but I wont name any names.

Hey, as long as you don't mind graduating from the same institution that that moron Dan Rather (former CBS anchor) graduated from, you should be all set. :)

Southwest Texas State (Sorry, I can't bring myself to call it Texas State-San Marcos) is a nice school. There is plenty of, shall we say, eye candy up there. Of course, as a SHSU Alumni, I prefer the ladies at SHSU.

What are you fellow SHSU alumni doing now or aspiring to be? As for myself I am in the waiting game for the US Border Patrol. Got my 60 day letter last week which means that I have completed all the pre-employement steps and in 60 days give or take I should be offered a job.

I am class of 1999. I then went on to grad school and taught history/criminology. I just hired on with Parks and Wildlife as a Park Police Officer. I start the Academy on the 17th of July and graduate on the 13th of December. I then have to attend the State Park Police Academy which is a 200 hour add on to the Basic Peace Officer Course. I will do that during the month of Feb.

I graduate in December. Afterward, I plan to apply to a few different agencies and see what happens.
Hutch,
Where do you go through the academy, Austin?
BLHutch

Game Wardens go through their own Academy in Austin, but those of us who work in the parks go through a regional academy. I'll be going to College of the Mainland Law Enforcement Academy in Texas City.....about ten minutes from the house.

You plan on working in the Galveston County area?

Hi,
Sorry for the delayed response. I didn't go to high school in this area. I'm working for the state rather than the locals.

It's a great school for CJ majors- You have a great pen miles away from you~ I would have went there if it was not 3 hours away from me.
