So, last week we became "OC Certified" at the academy. I was expecting a spray to the face and be forced to perform while under the full effects of the spray. Not even close.

They swabbed expired OC on my cheeks a couple inches below my eyes. I didn't feel a thing, in fact, it smelled good, like peppers.

They wouldn't spray me even after I requested it.

Once I get hired someplace, I'm going to make sure i get a full blast so I personally know how to operate under the effects.

Anyone else's academy do this? Thoughts on this practice?

C'mon down! I'll hose you!

BTW, when you get hired, are you going to get shot by your duty weapon too? Just to get the full affect :D

Didn't have to get sprayed at the Academy. But I got sprayed when I was hired. Not the worst, but definately an experience.

Just wait until the first time you use it on someone you're trying to arrest.

You'll get at least as much as the moron who's fighting with you.

I had trouble getting my eyes open but after about 5 minutes the bad pain was gone. I've gotten sprayed worse on the street in fights here. I had to run through a thick cloud of it once chasing a guy I just sprayed and then fight him. The academy training is definitely beneficial as I was able to work through it since I knew what to expect.

In the LASD academy, we got sprayed right between the eyes with Freeze +P(CS/OC mix), then we have to hit a dummy bag for 20 seconds. My face felt like it was literally on fire. Even when we did "hot"gas(tear gas), this was nothing compared to the Freeze +P. Oh the memories :D ...

When I took the POST Chemical Agents class for animal control we had the option of how we wanted to be exposed, either swabbed under the eyes or a few drops in your mouth. It wasn't really much of an exposure.

I was sprayed several times by police officers spraying at a dogs I was trying to catch, usually while they were standing behind me spraying over my shoulder

I'm pretty sure we will be getting a full spray in the face and will then have to handcuff someone at my academy.

I felt bad for those guys/gals who got double and triple teamed! That must have sucked! Well, at least I don't THINK it happened to me... :p

Man, ya'll so willing to help me out, thanks1 :p

I only scored "Recommend with Reservation" on the oral board, and the chief there does not interview those with anything less than a "recommend" score.

It was my first board, and i learned a hell of a lot from it! I'll be re-applying once i finish the academy.

At my Acadmey, I got sprayed by one of the instructors who happens to be a buddy of mine.

The bastard hosed me down real good in both eyes (instead of just one)......then we had to fight for 30-45 seconds with others that were in red suits.......

After I was finished, I stuck my head in a 10 gallon bucket of cold water for about an hour and felt much better....:D

I have to get Re-Cert on the 27th by my Dept to carry. They just redid the rules and regs regaurding carrying OC so everyone has to go through the class again.

We have the CHOICE of having it sprayed into a cup, and inhaling (and thats it), or being sprayed and then performing under the effects.

I have been sprayed a few times, im not worried about doing it again.

 <-- Me on OC

I think I would actually rather be sprayed. I would want to know the actual effect of the stuff. I wouldn't want the suprise in the field of it being stronger then I remembered.

In the academy they asked for volunteers to be sprayed, you didn't have to get it done. I did get sprayed. After they sprayed us we had to radio for help and then fight for about 45 to 60 seconds. It wasn't that bad but nothing great either. The worst part was getting it in your mouth as it dripped down your face and then taking a shower and having what's in your hair get into your eyes all over again. You can still fight pretty good after being sprayed, particularly if you know how to react to it, good experience.

Wow, that really is lame. At the Law Enforcement Specialist school in Lackland we had to be sprayed in the eyes for two seconds and then run a two minute baton course.

It is not a pleasant experience, mine was the best day of my life

We lined up 4 in a line and got sprayed by the spray we carried the whole time in the academy (if I knew this I would have emptied the canister!!) Anyways I got hit, they said "are you ready?" and I got out "Yes SI*, and was met with a spray to the eyes/and mouth!! I then was attacked by 3 guys trying to get my gun! Anyways, after about 2 minutes of fighting with them, we were led to this face wash station, that basically looked like a drinking fountain, but barely any water was running through it, and every time I tried to flush the eyes, my eyeball would hit the faucet. Anyways, after about an hour (i know, took longer due to pressure) I got them flushed out (I did not wash the bottom part of my eye, and spray was in there. It feels like your face is in a fry pan from the stuff!! Later when going home I got the affects again! Good ol' showers!! Trust me, be happy, it sucked! You will get hit by friendly fire plenty!

When I was in the Coast Guard they used to swab us with Curb60, our chemical irritant version of OC. Now CBP wanted to start spraying us with our OC but the union got invovled and put a stop to it. Apparently some of our people are wussies!!

In my academy we wore safety glasses and got sprayed on the chest.
