I got a 21" ASP Federal for Christmas, and I've only opened it maybe a dozen times. My problem is, I didn't realise that the Federal isn't blued, it's painted, and to my surprise, the paint has chipped and flaked off on a small portion of the shaft (It hasn't been struck on anything, other than the end to close it up). Has anyone had this problem, or have any advice? Thanks!

Yep!
Those points are "friction" points from the very few openings and closings! The ASP is a friction baton and opens and remains open on such. It is nothing like the Monondack which is ball bearing.
Not much you can do.....mine is all scarped up also. But nobody sees it unless I am using it...and if I have to use it.....nobody cares what it looks like!
Sorry I don't have better news! I just make sure I keep mine oiled slightly!

I wouldn't be too concerned about it unless of course I had one of these...
Yeah, I just don't understand why they would paint it instead of bluing it. The website said it is "black chrome." Oh well, what can ya do.

Is it an ASP brand? or a knockoff brand?

It's an ASP. It's called the federal. http://www.policemembers.com/police-supply/catalog/ASP-21-Expandable-Friction-LOC-Baton-Several-Options-p-16369.html
Why have you only opened it a dozen times ? You should train with it on a continuing basis. Who cares if the paint is scratched. Practice, Practice Practice. If you want it kept pristine, buy a second one and have it framed.

I had only (At the time) opened it a dozen times because I wasn't qualified in it yet. I did not have the proper training with it, so no use training with it the wrong way. I have since been qualified in it, and practice with it when I get a chance. And the reason I care about the paint chipping is because no paint= bare metal. Bare metal= rust. rust= loss of function. See my point?
