Does your agency let prospective officers "ride-along" with K-9 officers at all ? Or is that off-limits due to the fact that the dog is in the car and a ride along would be too difficult to maintain ?

K9's are not "mean" and hard to maintain. Just an FYI.

Well, my agency doesn't assign riders to us K9 handlers. The passenger front seat is primarily used for our storage of items that we need "on hand." Besides that, Baks doesn't allow anyone near the car anyway, so it would be a miserable ride.

My department only allows ridealongs with regular patrol officers.

It's a liability issue, as you have probably already figured out.

I've been on one...but I knew the guy through a friend. I assumed our city dept. allowed it, but maybe he bent a few rules...

His dog was not ill behaved (after the first hour or so, lol.)

My last rider got 4 stitches from my mal, so after that I was not allowed to have riders. For the last 8 years I worked a female mal with no problems, I even transported prisoners in my front seat every night almost for 8 years, then in Aug when I got this new dog that stopped with the riders.

I think it all depends on the dept. and the dog.

Our K-9 units did not have a cage. The working dogs were fairly disciplined, but tended to go a little nutty on code-3 runs. They were afraid the dog would bite a rider, so none were allowed.

Question for the handlers; Do most of your partners get excited on a hot run?

Here, they don't allow any ride-a-longs with K-9 due to liability issues. There was a Ride-a-long in the past with another agency in a town of 300K people and the dog mistakenly the ride-a-long as a criminal and bit him, he tried to sue, but since he signed a waiver, he failed.

I would say no.

I rode with K9 several times during an internship, I imagine that it depends entirly on the specific agency.

Here is a crazy idea...you could always call them and ask
