I've always wondered if the family of officers tend to be either very 'religious' (serious abut their faith) or abolutely cynical/atheistic?
It has always seemed to me that it is a job lending itself to extremes so I wondered about this one.

I'm not sure what you meant by that statement
It's about the same as any other profession. There are those that believe, those that don't, and those few fanatics to either side.

I think she means... and I'm just guessing here... that by the nature of your job, and the horrific things you see and the choice people you get to deal with everyday that cops may be more polarized to either extreme. It makes sense really, that people who have to deal with others in their (the others' "their") worst moments and deal with the blood and violence etc, you would think that cops and EMS and the like would be either very religious saying that they see Gods plan or understand blah blah blah, or they would be the opposite and see all the blood and gore and say "there can't be a God with things like this going on in the world...". I think, in truth that it really doesn't make much difference. Those that believe will believe no matter what, those that don't won't and those in the middle that aren't sure probably will see enough good and bad to not really make a decision. I'm sure there are those that are affected by the job and do switch sides so to speak but the majority I think stays at a status quo. Just my $1.05!
**Edit**
I should state...for the record, that I have become less religious over the years but I can't say how much of it is what I have seen and been involved in and how much is just me "loosing interest" so to speak.

I guess that makes sense.. Good explanation :D
On a side note, I'm not a very religious person.
I wasn't sure if it would come across good or not, I tend to babble sometimes. :)
I'm not so much anymore. I actually started to study some of the ancient Pagan religions. I am currently studying on my "native land" religion of Druidism, very interesting.

I attempt to be very serious about my faith and enjoy a daily relationship with My Lord. I spent a lot of time praying before getting into law enforcement to make sure that it was something I was supposed to do. At least in my dept. there are not that many that show a strong faith in God. Some say they believe, but you can't tell by their lifestyle. I also live in the South, considered the Bible Belt, so some go to church because it is the right thing to do.
As Chewy said though, this is not unlike any other profession. I have had jobs where the above statement could be said of the people I worked with. I will say that an officer prayed over our meal the other night in a restaraunt. It shocked me and he said, "You need a little religion in this line of work because you never know when you may have to meet your maker." Of course that can be said of all people also.

It's a pretty good cross section of society. There are cops of different religions and different levels of faith. Some take it seriously and some don't.

Yes, see... once again my attempt at brevity ensures the inability to articulate the simplest idea. Oh well.
I've always wondered if it would be a profession lending itself to more extremes but apparently not!
On the other hand, the officers I've known personally have all attended our church so I have seen kind of the extreme here eh? :)

Well, you've seen the ones who bother to show up for church anyway.
Our ex-chief, said he was a really religious family man...therefore he had an affair with his female minister :o
He's no longer in LE, and she is no longer in the ministry.
As for me, I am a believer and go to church not as much as I should.

My family (parents, etc) knows God but doesnt attend church. My wife and her family are very religious.
As far as my wife and I, we got really active in church shortly after our daughter was born(now 6 yrs old). Because we wanted her to grow up in a Christian home with a good church foundation.
I was a cop prior to my daughters birth so, I guess I can safely say; our religious preferance plays a part in my career but, is not a result of my career.
