After a four-hour standoff Wednesday, police shot and killed an armed man holed up in a south Cobb County motel.
Later, police discovered that the 49-year-old man, serving time for robbery, had escaped from a work release center in Alabama.
Cobb police first were called to the Budget Inn on Blairs Bridge Road in Mableton about 1:30 p.m. by a desk clerk asking for assistance in removing a guest who was refusing to leave, said Cpl. Dana Pierce.
Officers found the man pacing back and forth on a second-floor balcony, holding a handgun. The SWAT team was called in and for the next several hours, officers tried to talk the man into coming out peacefully, police said.
About 5:45 p.m. — four hours into the negotiations — officers shot tear gas into the motel room. The man, who had by this time been identified as Rickey Neal Taylor, came out of the room but headed down a flight of stairs "raising the gun as if to shoot at the officers," Pierce said.
Officers fired back, critically injuring the man. He later died at Atlanta Medical Center.
Taylor, who was convicted and sentenced in 2000 for first-degree armed robbery, escaped Tuesday from the Alexander City Community Based Facility Work Release Center in Alabama. He drove away from a construction site in a work truck, police said. The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave while the county's public safety internal affairs unit investigates.
