PA--Calling methamphetamines a public scourge, state police today announced a seizure worth about $2 million in street sales and the arrests of six people linked to an operation that stretched from California to Chester County.
At a news conference in the District Attorney's Office, State Police Capt. Steven O. McDaniel said an undercover investigation began in October 2004 when officers on routine patrol in Coatesville noticed suspicious activity. McDaniel declined to elaborate but said the probe is continuing.
Methamphetamines pose a serious, far-reaching public health threat because the ingredients for production are readily available, and the waste gases given off in the production process are fatal if inhaled, McDaniel said.
He said the probe led troopers to California, where they posed as buyers, at one point obtaining seven pounds of the drug, worth $940,000.
McDaniel said "key operatives" in the ring were Aaron Frederick Christopher, 23, of Palm Springs, Calif., who was selling crystal methamphetamine, a highly potent form of the drug, to Donald J. McGuigan, 43, of Thorndale, who was reselling the drug through operatives in Chester County.
Extradition proceedings have been initiated for Christopher and McGuigan, who will be transported to Chester County after they face charges in California, said Chester County Deputy District Attorney Stephen J. Kelly, who is prosecuting the cases.
The other defendants are Steven Everett Stringer, 38, of Downingtown; Veronica Nina Root, 28, of Chester Springs; Jennifer Elizabeth Stansbury, 23, of Coatesville; and Isaac Garza, of Palm Springs, Calif.
District Attorney Joseph W. Carroll said the probe represented an extraordinary example of cooperation between federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
