Several school buses were stolen from Orleans Parish, loaded with storm victims and driven out of New Orleans toward Houston in desperate acts to leave the ravaged city, according to reports.

Three school buses were stopped Thursday night in Port Allen, La., just west of Baton Rouge after they were stolen, according to WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. The evacuees were placed on other buses and transferred to shelters in Texas.

An 18-year-old also decided to take matters into his own hands and stole an abandoned city school bus and drove storm victims to Texas, according to a CNN report.

The teen driver, Jabbar Gibson, 18, said he had never driven a bus before but wanted to save people.

"If it wasn't for him, we'd still be in New Orleans on the Gulf," bus passenger Randy Nathan said. "He got the bus for us."

Authorities allowed the renegade passengers inside the Astrodome but Gibson could find himself in trouble after taking the school bus.

Damn straight. At least he did something instead of bitching and whining. If the prosecute him they should be 'B' slapped.

Fair enough. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. He was definitely part of the solution. I agree with Frogdiver. At least he did something besides running his mouth about how terrible a job the government is doing down there.

At least he borrowed something useful (seems implied consent to me), rather than stealing an expensive, worthless item like a TV.

I think there will be a lot of unpopular politicians if these guys are prosecuted. They are a small handfull of people who actually tried doing something. I don't know about Mayor but he'd be good for the the Emergency Preparedness Office that left 500 buses sitting below sea level.

He saved some lives in the process, he evacuated that many more people who are just going to get evacuated anyways(or die). He did the right thing in my book.

I'd have a hard time arresting him. If he does get convicted, I hope the lazy a&% Governor or Bush gives him a full pardon.

I heard on the news here in Houston that Harris County Judge Robert Eckels helped him fill out a report so that NOPD will know where the bus is. He went on to say that the young man had shown quite a bit of ingenuity and should be commended for his actions!

I do see a little humor in the fact he mentioned he never drove a bus before. He didn't mention "I've never stolen a car before". Well, at least he put his skills to good use.
