Hey Guys,
I wanna start off by thanking you for all the help i've recieved from this board. I Live in New York and i will be graduating with my degree in Criminal Justice in June. New York usually only test once a year and i'm only 22 so i'm willing to move to become a police officer, because i figure i might as well while i'm young. I was wondering if anyone has any information on any departments who are hiring a lot. I would love to work in VIrginia or N. Carolina but any info would be appreciated. Thanks guys, i really appreciate it!!

I would try Virginia State Police & Henrico County in Virginia as the best... I think the City of Richmond may be hiring a lot soon too. And in NC I would look into Raleigh.

Just about all of the cities in NoVA, Richmond, and Tidewater all always hiring, as well as the VSP. It depends on which part of VA you are willing to live. Personally, I don't care for NoVA, but Prince William Co, Fairfax Co, and Arlington are all good depts. In Richmond, look at Chesterfield and Henrico. In Tidewater, you have Va Beach, Norfolk, Newport News, and Chesapeake. I'd stay away from Portsmouth and Hampton.

VA Beach is hiring like crazy from what I've heard. The crowds are crazy in the summer, the but rest of the year, it's pretty relax. And you get to talk to all the hot beach girls!

Fairfax County, VA also recruits actively. I have seen them on college campuses in upstate NY a couple times. It may be worth it to see if they are coming this way again anytime soon.

Now that is funny. I attend college in the heart of Fairfax County, and I've never seen them on my campus. I guess they like the imports.

VSP is always hiring - they usually have at least two academy sessions per year, and they are an excellent organization. If you'd rather go local, Chesterfield County and Henrico are also excellent organizations. I'd stay away from Richmond city, as my buddies who work for Richmond are not happy - morale is apparently bad and they're not getting a lot of support and are getting their equipment taken away due to lack of funding (no more take-home cars, cell phones, pagers, etc.).

I question your motive for wanting to be a cop in VA or NC -- your statement implies that you're considering a career in these parts because in NY they only test once a year. The number of tests per year should not be a factor in where you spend the next 25-30 years of your life. (And it will probably be closer to 30 if you choose a job with VRS retirement.)

In Virginia, I'd recommend Fairfax County -- primarily because they have the best toys, and IMHO the retirement is better than the state (VRS) retirement system. Plus, while some of Fairfax's neighboring jurisdictions are putting parking tickets on officers' cars (to include marked cruisers) while they attend court, Fairfax provides a parking garage for their officers at the courthouse. While this may not seem like a huge deal, it does tend to indicate strong government/community support.

I would recommend them....and several others in the area....

It amazes me how people consider Northern Virginia
to still be a part of Virginia. :D

We residents of NOVA wish to secede !!!
We send all our tax money downstate and they only send a little back.
It's a rip...

As far as I'm concerned NoVA HAS seceded. They've become part of DC :p
