Not to knock MTA but I didn't become a cop to stand at Grand Central or whatever for eight hours, patrol work is more my thing. If I was going to work somewhere else, it would be for another local police department.

I work with a guy that is waiting on another department. When we came through training together, he was seriously considering not taking the offer. All it took was a few months on patrol to make him reconsider. When it comes right down to it, you need to remember a few things:
1) Patrol work often winds up being sitting on the t/s... or standing at a fixed station house post. or sitting with someone else's prisoner at the hospital, because they were arrested in another command but hospitalized in yours. Or driving a boss, which means going to everyone's jobs but handling none of them.
Or standing a fixed post on a roof of a building, and you're not even in housing.
2) More money is more money. You need to do a lot of OT to make the same money you would make working MTA.
3) If you want the OT, better hope you are in a house that doesn't have a low OT cap - generally a hellhole, but that may appeal to you.
4) See any and all other points made. Don't write off the idea without thinking long and hard about it. Nothing to lose by following through and doing what you need to do to keep your options open.

I got the letter yesterday. I'm going. I don't know if I'll be able to pass the physical as I haven't run since the academy, but you know what? I'm going to at least try.

NYPDHopeful,

The last test was offered last year. They don't offer them very often as very few people leave the job. It's not administered through DCAS as the MTA is not a city agency. They are actually a NYS entity, and are commissioned in Connecticut as well. They administer their own exam. I took it and passed, but it doesn't look like I will be called for the August physical. The next physical will probably be offered in January, according to the HR people at the MTA.

My question is this. I know MTA pays more, but is NYS Park Police a better job? I am processing for NYSPP now and scheduled for the MTA PAT next weekend. Seems like I may have a tuff decision to make.

i think u would do more police work with park police. more freedom and trainging in other areas. i mean what beats workin at jones beach all summer (if u get that area) but then again what beats more money, doing nothing and the possibility of 12 hr tours (3 on 4 off)

Well, missed the run by 13 seconds. I'll have to try again next time. The only thing that is bothering me is that I ran an 11:47 for NYSPP and yesterday I only ran a 12:42. I thought I would do better.

MTA is thw gig to work for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Certified LEO in 2 states (CT and NY)
-Excellent pay!
-State benefits!
-More opportunities for special unit advancement!
-Excellent training!
-Never cold...never wet!
-If you think they "do nothing" YOU ARE 100% WRONG!!!! Pull up in omni and see what they do!!! They collar...and do so because THEY want to...not because the end of the quarter is coming and they need a number!
-Senior brass actually has a brain and thinks things out...compareed to monkey see monkey do attitude fo the many other departments areound here!!

The job gets old quick folks with the NYPD. If your going to say I am full of it...I will tell you you have no idea what the job is about then! You didn't take this job to stand at Grand Central for eight hours???? What the hell do you think Ipact is? What do you think Critical Response is???? If you think doing "police work" is why you joined, you might as well give up now! MTA Officers do the same work we do every day. They do things you don't see!!!! You know they have a Highway Unit???? Warrants???? Ect.... Don't be stupid...DO IT!

How do you know in advance what the physical test requirements will be?

The physical test requirements follow the standard Cooper Chart. Look it up online, its there.
