Any one familiar with this? Anyone taken Matt Furey's course on it or seen the tapes/dvd's? Basically it appears to be submission wrestling. I would love to hear from anyone with any experience with it, either with furey or otherwise. He said he learned it from Gotch, I cant remember if it was Frank or Carl.

One of the officer's at our department has purchased several things promoted by Furey. He trains for Celtic Games and swears by Furey's stuff.

Yeah, ive got a few of his products. Overall theyre good, but not all worth the $$ he wants for them. Thats why i'm looking for personal experience with this other. I'd also like to know how much general knowledge there is out there about the sport independent of mr furey.

Yes, he basically teaches submission grappling (catch wrestling, some mixed grappling styles etc). I have long been addicted to submission grappling and have trained extensively in the sport (counters, counters to counters). It is like a chess game on the mat. The stuff is great for LEOs because 99% of our unarmed violent encounters come to down to grappling and pain compliance.

If you are interested in the sport. There are competitions around the USA on a regular basis. There are books, DVDs etc. You do not have to pay a lot for the information. If you want it strictly for self defense, there is no need to learn many of the techniques (ie- counters, x-guard, spider guard etc).

Some people charge a fortune for martial arts training as though they had invented it and held the patent themselves. Surf the Internet and you will find the same techniques taught by someone else at a reduced price, if not free.

I trained in shootwrestling for about six months and we concentrated primarily on the submission grappling joined with strikes. Ive got a good base of knowledge of the different types, styles, etc through my own research. I just would like to come in contact with someone who has specific training and/or kowledge of catch wrestling. Ive got Farmer Burns' book already. Just wanted to see if someone on here may have happened to go to a seminar/school on it, or perhaps has studied the history of it. Im sorry if I didnt make myself clear on my first post.

Ah, now I see. No, sorry. I trained it with the son of professional wrestler Ron Hill (his father used to take on all challengers at fairs to earn extra money and his style is catch wrestling). Some of the techniques I liked, some not as much.

Ahh, now THATs exactly what I was looking for!! Actual personal experience with someone who actually did catch wrestling. I am also a fan of shooting(not the pistol kind, nor "shooting for the leg, hips"). I believe that if the opponent wishes to do me greivous bodily harm, that I should indulge his desire for the harm, but inflict it upon him instead. Basically put: a man cannot hit me with a broken arm, or kick me with a broken ankle, knee, hip socket, etc. I would LOVE to hear more about your experiences with Mr. Hill. In this forum, pm's, or email.

To start: what were your favorite techniques and why?

what techniques do you think are worthless, or simply not as good as other offerings?

thank you.

I liked the leg and foot locks the best. People tend to defend their upper bodies; however, they never think about defending their legs. The other submissions are similar to BJJ without trying to achieve a dominant position first. I will attempt a submission without entering a particular position only if I can do so without losing ground. Otherwise I favor the BJJ style. I routinely spar with people with a significant strength and size advantage in order to eliminate the "fluff" from the "real stuff".

I trained with him a few years ago and rarely see him now. He was a "train with pain" type of person and I never left without bruises.
