Interesting. Whats the pay like?

according to the brochure on the website...

NYS Court Officer Trainees make $33,203 a year...upon completion of the two year traineeship you are promoted to NYS Court Officer and you'll make $41,751 annually...top pay is $61,182...not sure how long it takes for top pay...there are promotional opportunities such as sergeant or lt...but those pay grades aren't listed...

and i believe retirement takes 30 years...but atleast there is no maximum age requirement...

Is it possible for somebody who failed the NYPD psych to get hired for another position like Court officer that also gives a psych exam?

Hi,

Forgive me if this thread is too old to be resurrecting (some forums have rules about that, but I didn't see it mentioned here). I'll also be taking the court officer exam this winter. My uncle, who is a retired captain, talked me into it, as he really seemed to love his job. One question though. What is their relationship like with other law enforcement officers in the NYC area?

NYPDHopeful,

He said that he wasn't sure because it varies so much from test to test(depending on things like number of applicants, budget, etc...), but he thought that it would be pretty fast. Certainly faster than the last exam, which took 3 full years for anyone to get their results. The information on the court website also says that those near the top of the list who also pass the physical and psychological can expect to enter the academy late next spring. Hopefully that's true.

Hey how are you. I took exam #4009 and I scored a 94.58, list #2000. Do you think I will hear from them soon? I lost a sibling in the 9/11 tragedy and did not put in for the 10 extra points. I would have been there with you. LOL.... Question, was the Psych a challenge was it okay? Thanks, hope to hear from you soon...

yeah i took nypd exam 4009 also...i'm not exactly sure when they'll start processing people again...i would imagine they would start soon though...the psych portion of the process isn't really a challenge...the hardest part was taking the written psych and answering 1000 true/false questions...you can imagine it gets pretty tedious...and the oral psych wasn't a problem...as long as you are truthful on the exam and in the oral psych theres really nothing to worry about...good luck with your process...

wow, three years...thats quite awhile...hopefully that will not happen with the next test...

did he mention how promotion works when you are a court officer?...do you just take an exam like NYPD or is it different?...

Promotion from court officer-trainee to court officer is automatic after 2 years. There is an exam for sergeant, but for lieutenant and above it's all a game of politics and pretty much depends on who you know.

This next exam is supposed to be processed much more quickly than the last one. Like I said, those who do well are expected to enter the academy late next spring.

Hopefully it will be quick. It's a great job: good pay and benefits, 24/7 arrest authority throughout NYS and nationwide carry, and strictly 9-5 M-F unless you request ovetime. The retirement isn't great, but it's supposed to get better soon. In addition, all the court officers that I know say that they will likely be "upgraded" from peace officers to full police officers within the next few years. In all honesty though, court officers already have a significant amount of authority for being peace officers, and police officer status wouldn't have much of an effect.
From what my uncle says, the only "downside" to this job is that new recruits are not permitted to carry firearms for the first 4-6 months. After 4-6 months they go out to the range and requalify, then they are issued their weapon. This is actually an evaluation period to separate those who can handle the responsibility from those who just want a gun.
