View Full Version : other than honerable

I see quite a few posts here regarding people who have been discharged from the military under other than honerable conditions wishing to work in law enforcement. My first suggestion to them would be to try and get an upgrade thru the discharge review board. My second would be assuming youve lived a productive life since your discharge,to petiton the military records correction board and ask for an upgrade based on clemency. My third would be, to simply forget to mention you were in the military period.

My first suggestion would be for you to read the responses to those posts, and see how hard it is to get an upgrade.

My second suggestion would be for you to find another website to hang out on. Forget to mention they were in the military?

I have been in the United States Navy for almost twenty years.
Every person that I have known that got an OTH or BCD discharge deserved what they received. Every person that received an adverse discharge that I have been associated with knowingly and willingly moved in that negative direction.

Sage advice, da moose! If you want to be a LEO and have a blemish in your past (like being discharged under less than honorable conditions from the military), lie about it! I mean it's not like LE agencies do background investigations and polygraph/CVSA tests, right?

Telling others to lie is the WORST advice, but I doubt any serious applicant would heed your advice. And yes, intentionally withholding information is the same as fabricating details, it's all still a lie.

Hey jackass...if you look up to the right of sbrad's posting, you will see that he is a VERIFIED LEO (that's law enforcement officer in case you are unble to figure it out).
Obviously he has gone through some sort of vetting process to get where he is today.....and obviously, you haven't.

Now go hang out at the "How to Clean and Maintain Fry Grills" thread at the McDonald's employees website.....

So yes, they deserved what they got because they knew better.....

Yes, Every PRT failure deserved it, every person who went UA deserved it, and every out-of-standards person deserved it. Discharges don't happen overnight. They require numerous DOCUMENTED problems. If the person weren’t a dirt bag, his Chief would step in and take care of the punishment and keep it at his/her level.

In case someone reads this thread wanting some real information I would like to offer up what I have figured out and share my personal experience.

In August of 1990 I joined the delayed entry program for the Navy nuclear program. In August 1991 I shipped out to Orlando FL for basic training. Sometime inbetween 1990 and 1991 I developed a small kidney stone. The docs found this and DQ'd me from the nuclear program. I was given the option to stay in the Navy and pick another field which wouldn't put me on a submarine or told that I could go home. I chose to go home and attend college since I had joined only for the benefits and training of the nuclear program.

I recently applied to a local PD and I had to go research the conditions of my discharge. It turns out that after 1982 they classify any discharge under 180 days as an uncharacterized - entry level seperation. This means that it really neither counts against or for you.

As far as the advice to not mention it: I really feel this is bad advice. During the course of a government BI it will come up that you have been in the military. If you lie and say that you haven't then you will get disqualified. As people have said on this forum over and over again just tell the truth.

I hope this helps those that are/were in a similar situation to me and were curious about the details.

Fury
