Hello. My fiancee is graduating from the Police Academy soon, and I was looking for gift ideas. I think I know what I want to get him, but I thought it would be good to hear some of your input. This is such a special day for him, so I want to get him something that really will mean a lot to him.

Thanks!

one 'option' would be to get him a backup weapon. IMO if he were smart he'd appreciate it much more than any gift I can think of.

on a side note, that's what I'm being given as a gift.

Some of the equipment that he might want to have but that the dept may not issue.

A small but powerful flashlight
A pouch for latex gloves ( we deal with bloody people sometimes)
A leatherman tool
A kevlar vest although MOST dept's now supply them
An extra set of handcuffs
An aluminum clipboard with a storage compartment for blank forms

I would not suggest a good watch or an engraved pen. Watches get torn up on duty ( I use cheap Timex watches ) and pens get lost.

A friend of mine in the Nevada Highway Patrol showed me his streamlight. I was AMAZED! it put my 4 D battery mag light to shame!! I cant wait to be a police officer so I can have cool things too!! :)

A few things that I have picked up over the years that have come in handy:

Good pair of polarized sunglasses, my preference is Revo
Rechargeable flashlight, either a duty light as mentioned or a small tactical flashlight
XM or Sirius radio, if allowed by Dept policy
Digital camera
Vehicle/Trunk organizer or duty bag if they don't have take-home cars

Officially....maybe, I've had one for about a year. About two months ago they said that satellite radios have been interfering with our VG2's. SO they have suspended the use of satellite radios in the cars until they complete a study. I have a VG2 and never had a false alert from my satellite radio, at least that I know of.

I hope he knows how lucky he is to get you! they are all great gifts, I've found that the Stinger is the greatest. It is expensive (I can usually get them for around $84) but it is WELL worth the money. They can make a HUGE difference especially if working the later or night time hours.

I know I am late in this list, but my husband loved his St. Michael metal (actually on a keychain) that I had blessed by a priest at a local parish. But, he really loves the leatherman and mini-mag that I got him (and engraved his last name and badge number on) inside a heavy duffle bag. It's big enough to carry one change of clothes, and misc. items but small enough that it's not cumbersome. Also, since he works midnights, I got a pillow for him to keep in his locker (in its own plastic bag) and a blanket.

All I got when I graduated was dinner at McDonald's. From reading the posts here I can see that the gifts have improved greatly.

I recieved a coin from my ex's mother, which I've carried with me since my first day of duty and she also bought me the cross that clips on my visor. Another thing I was given was a kick a$$ beer mug that says Police or something to that affect on it and my name was engraved in it. I used it on graduation night and now it's retired to my china cabinet.

I rode with a Deputy who patrols a rather large area in the Rocky Mountains a few months ago and he had Sirius hooked up. He said he would go crazy without it. I think because it's hard to get any radio stations to come in up in the woods.

satellite radio reciever and subscription.

All the gadgets and gizmos are nice but during the down time OR when busting *** accross town - Its kinda nice to dial in some jams. :D

The guy suggesting the naked massage isnt a bad idea either - you can dial in some sexy music on the ol satellite radio

My husband is graduating this month. I wanted to buy him an off duty gun,I wanted to surprise him. But I was told that I couldnt buy it. He would have to purchase the gun. this was told to me by a police store in the Bronx. My mom is buying him a police badge charm with his number on it... Good luck...

That's where I wear my pin too. I also have a St. Michael medallion (inside a case with a prayer card) pinned to the ceiling in my patrol car.

My Mum gave me a watch. She knew I would need one and don't usually wear one. I have had it six years and it has never been broken. I only wear it at work (usually) and each time I look down to see the time when writing some punk up, I remember that I have had that watch since grad.

It has become my good luck charm

I think an iPod is a great gift....especially if you pair it with the Monster FM Transmitter that charges the iPod and broadcasts it over the radio.

Working days especially, I need my iPod because it's alllllll talk radio. I hate commercials and this works great for me.

Just a thought....though there were plenty of other great suggestions too.
