Anyone know what county in the US has the largest Police Force? I recently moved from Fairfax County Virginia and heard that they do ..but then someone said it was most likely L.A. Anyone know if its either of these or another place?

Thanks

I think New York City takes it...

I'd put my bets on the NYPD as well

It used to be in this order, mind you this was almost 12 years ago too.
1. NYPD
2. LAPD
3. SDSO
4. Miami PD
Our label as the third largest policing agency in the U.S. was on one of our recruiting pamphlets. I don't know the order anymore though, but safe money says that the top two haven't changed much.

The largest three police departments are in this order:

NYPD
Chicago P.D.
LAPD

Being that I can't edit, Yes Chicago P.D. has 13,500 Officers which is about 3-5000 more than LAPD.

I think second place is so far behind it ought to be third or fourth place. I think they have close to 40,000 sworn last I heard.

NYPD is the largest police force in the United States.....has 39,890 sworn personnel!
It is also the 3rd largest "army" in the world (excluding US Forces).
Chicago PD #2= 13,289 sworn personnel.
LAPD #3= 9,185 sworn personnel

Side note:
Miami- 1,000 sworn members
San Diego- 1,984 sworn members
Fairfax- 1,237 sworn members
Houston- 5,283 sworn officers

Really? So is the order China, US and NYPD by total number?

They show the stats in NYPD history to rookies. I just looked it up in the notes from back then and they use the word "militia, not army. And they define militia as government based, trained, structured and funded.

But accodring to the numbers (excluding US Armed Focres), the NYPD is the the 3rd largest organized militia outisde the United States. NYPD does not refer to all branches together. It is basically comparing the number to the individiual branch equivelant to an ground based army. Thus: China, India, NYPD, Russia, North Korea.

But when you add up all branches and divisions, etc.... the numbers are reported as:
Total Military Size- ALL Divisions Totaled (per NYPD handouts)
China 2,840,000
United States 1,431,000
Russia 1,200,000
India 1,145,000
North Korea 1,055,000

--->Don't shoot the messenger...just reporting what is taught!

I worked as a cop in Fairfax County and at about 1,300 sworn officers they are nowhere near the largest in the country. It's a good department and possibly the largest (I think the VSP is in a close second) in VA.

Wasn't the initial question what county had the largest police force? just wondering cause I don't know the answer to that. Thinking probably L.A.

If you are asking counties only LA County Sheriff is the largest in the country (I think).

VA Beach says on their webpage they are the largest municipal dept in VA but I don't see how according to their annual report which puts them in under 1000 sworn.
