Are you a smoker? How old were you when you started? How much do you smoke?
I used to smoke, but it's been close to 13 years now since I quit, and I would NEVER light up again. I caved in to peer pressure and smoked for quite a few years before I got sick and had no choice but to quit. It worked out very well. ;)

I started when I was 18. I'm 27 now and stopped smoking 4 months ago when the Dr almost failed me on the medical review.

I started smoking (cigarettes) when I was about 20. I quit about a year and a half ago when I started physically preparing myself for an LE career (no kidding). Quitting smoking was the best thing I have ever done for myself, bar none, in my entire life.

Did you quit cold turkey, or slowly?

I started smokin' when I was 13, quitted when I was 16 (bored), then started smoking when I was 18 and still smokin' Seneca (Native American) brand cigarettes. The brands before was Marlboro and Salem. Hate their tastes and they're stronger causing me to cough harder...
Seneca is no problem, but have a hard time puffing that brand, seems like they're "anti-smoke" brand??!! Still I play and jog and walk a lot.

First, I set a target date to quit completely. Then, I stopped smoking during the day, and it was difficult, but I just did it. Eventually, I found it easier to concentrate on my work that way (got more done without taking smoke breaks). Then I rationed myself to only 10 smokes a night. After a week, 9 smokes a night. After a week 8 smokes a night...etc. etc. until I was down to 3 smokes a night. By that time, I ended up throwing them out before my target date. I had a serious "psycological" addiction to get over. If I had a beer, had to have a smoke. If I was sitting around, bored, had to have a smoke. I started drinking a lot of water every time I wanted a smoke. Also, bought a YO-YO to give me something to do with my hands (stop the filthy thoughts!). In time, smoking was a thing of MY past.
Sometimes I still want to smoke, but I've got enough edge over it now to say NO. And I'll probably live much longer without them. That extra time with my wife and kids is worth it. Plus, once I picked up by my local PD for employment.....I can't smoke (department policy). So, I my case, it's WIN-WIN.
I absolutely LOVE prisoners we have in custody who smoke. If they behave , I'll let them smoke. If not , they can have a royal nick fit and our county jail is smoke free too.
A cigarette can be a POWERFUL tool to get someone to cooperate. :)

mcsap, have you ever let them light up at the "scene" to just...relax and talk. Always wondered about things like that (must be those COPS episodes).

Hehehehe. I'm sure they'll behave so they can get their waiting fingers on the cigarette. :)

Just like a pint of milk in a commercial during interrogation after a suspect ate a donut. :p
