My husband and I are planning on moving to Ft. Lauderdale so that he can pursue his dream of a law enforcement career. Does anyone live in that area?

The reason I ask is because I was looking for a copy of a local newspaper and an apartment guide book. I've already done all of the internet searching that I can, but I was hoping to find more info before our mid-October trip.

Try a real estate agent. You can go to your local library to look at the yellow pages for Ft Lauderdale. Find a real estate agent that advertises helping renters. You can also find apartment complexes there.
Is your husband LE yet? If so, you can call the PD and see if they can help you/advise you where to rent.

We have had luck with the chamber of commerce. They sent us a package with phonebook and guide in it when we moved.
