We're gearing up for the IMF/World Bank protests (again :( )
Security gets tight around here when this happens, and things gets a little itchy. The property manager for the building that I work in issued this alert:

TO: All Tenants

FROM: Senior General Manager

DATE: April 19, 2004

SUBJECT: Spring Protests in Washington, DC

As most of you are aware, the IMF and World Bank organizations have scheduled meetings to take place Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24th, 2004. We have been advised by Barton Security that protests participants’ numbers could reach 2,000 – 3,000. The main sponsor is an organization called Globalize This (www.globalizethis.org (http://)).

Following on Sunday, April 25th, is the March for Women’s Lives. It is expected that this March, which was organized by NARAL (www.naral.org (http://)) will also draw a variety of protestors, including Pro-Choice, Pro-Life, etc. The Park Police has issued permits for up to 750,000 on Sunday.

We believe that the protest activity will begin on or about Wednesday, April 21 and go through Monday, April 26, 2004, with the bulk of the activity occurring on Saturday and Sunday with some spill-over into Monday.

Listed below are precautions being taken and recommendations for the upcoming events:

Additional Security Officers and Engineering Staff will be on-site throughout the week.

We will be prohibiting construction-related activities or deliveries to the loading dock from 6:00p.m. Thursday, April 22nd through 5:00am Tuesday, April 27th. This will be subject to change based on changing conditions.

At this point, roof decks will be open as normal, pending any other directives issued by the Secret Service. Any weekend access to the roof deck MUST be cleared by the Secret Service.

Please discourage visitors or functions within your suite during the period from Friday, April 23rd through Sunday, April 25th, 2004, as traffic around DC may be difficult due to street closures and security precautions.

Monitor Info Centre on a regular basis. In the event of a building closure or other incident that warrants notification, information will be posted on Info Centre as quickly as possible.

Monitor News channels, newspapers and radio stations for updates on street closures or expected protests. Websites such as the Metropolitan Police Department (www.mpdc.org (http://)), Golden Triangle BID (www.gtbid.com (http://)), Downtown BID (downtowndc.org (http://)) and WTOP news (www.wtopnews.com (http://)) should have helpful and updated information.

For information on specific protest activities, websites such as (www.indymedia.org (http://)) and (www.naral.org (http://)) should have the most current information.

Building doors will be locked on both Saturday and Sunday. Access keys will be required for entry.

The building may be locked during normal operating hours on Monday, dependent on the nature of any spill-over activity from Sunday. Please advise your employees to carry their access keys and identification with them on Monday, should the building be locked.

If you are planning to be in the District over the weekend, attached is a Traffic Advisory published by the Downtown BID and the Metropolitan Police listing the currently planned street closings. Please note that this list is subject to change. In addition, the Metropolitan Police Department will use “rolling street closings” as they follow protest and march activity. These closings are not published as they are in response to activity and change with the movement of the activities.

As always, we will share any additional information we receive with you as soon as it is feasible. Carr Real Estate Services and its security partner, Barton Protective Services, will monitor these events and will update each of our affected customers accordingly. The updates will be provided through memos to tenants, InfoCentre, email, and/or telephone. We also strongly encourage you to monitor the local news for the most current information and updates. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the management office.

I'm just wondering how many protesters are gonna have to visit the police salon for a wooden shampoo this year. Many of them must have incurred brain damage, as they seem to want to come back for more...

And if you have happen to see this DC, and you have to be out there, stay safe. I hope you won't have to kick somebody's ***. But I imagine that probably isn't in the cards.
