hey forum,

Do you get a chance to pick your shifts when you are hired as a rookie?
I ask because it will be difficult for me to work at night since i got an elderly mother to
take care of. anyone know about the nypd's rules for work shifts?

You will not have the ability to choose your hours at first. When you eventually end up in a permanent command, you can request steady tours -- but that doesn't mean you will necessarily get the ones that you want. What matters is what the job needs, and not what is most convenient for you.
