Can you even carry a handgun at 18? I thought you had to be 21?

Are guns registered in Mississippi? We don't have a gun registration in Texas, the 4473 form your dad filled out when he bought it is not a registration for a gun. The 4473 is just the background check. In Texas, at 18 you can legally own a hand gun, you just can't purchase one (IE- inherit or receive as a gift from your parents). In Texas, its not illegal for you to keep a hand gun in your truck at the age of 18.

Texas also does not regulate ownership, just possession and carry.

Does TX let everyone CCW automatically or you need a permit. If a permit, is it easy to get (assuming you have a clean BI) or do they send everyone through the ringer to get one?

With out a CHL, you can keep a hand gun in your vehicle and you can carry from your vehicle to any property under your control and vise verse (IE-home, 2nd home your office). With a CHL you can carry any public place that does not have the "30.06" sign posted. The posting of a 30.06 sign is up to the property owner and the sign must have specific wording, size and placement for it to be valid. Schools, government buildings, bars, courthouses are prohibited as well. To get a permit you take a 10 hour class, pass a written test, qualify and submit a fingerprint card. You can qualify with a semi auto or revolver. If you qualify with a semi auto you can carry a revolver or semi auto after you receive your permit. If you qualify with a revolver that is all you can carry. You are not limited to carrying the gun you qualified with as long as you stick to the guide lines above. Once you take the class and qualify you mail in your packet and finger print card. If I recall correctly it takes 6-8 weeks to receive your permit in the mail. I never got one, I previously worked at a range/gun retailer that offered the classes.
