I am 23 years old with military experience and a BA in Criminology. I like to think I have a fairly clean past, but one transgression keeps popping up in my head whenever I think about my background.

When I was 21, an acquaintance gave me one of her prescription pills, I believe it was a vicodin but I could be mistaken. I did not take it, as it clicked that I was doing something stupid, and I gave it away. Other than this, I have absolutely no involvement or past in drug use.

Upon taking the civil service exam for a local agency, we were prompted to answer a series of background questions. One of these questions was if we had ever obtained prescription medication illegally. I answered no, as I wasn't sure if this qualified because I didn't take it, buy it, or falsify any prescription.

If however, this was the case, I would absolutely contact the recruitment office and inform them of the situation. I realize if this came up in the polygraph, I would automatically be disqualified, so I just want to have a clear view of the details.

Any help or insight given would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Answering no to this question means you lied on your application. It didn't ask you if you took the meds, it didn't ask you if you bought the meds, and it didn't ask you if you falsified a prescription. It asked you if you obtained the meds.
Obtain - ob·tain/əbˈtān/
Verb: Get, acquire, or secure (something):

Once they learn that you lied on your application you will probably be automatically DQ'ed. You want to be a LEO but you are willing to lie to become one? Not a very smart way to start a career in law enforcement.
