I have wanted to become a police officer for most of my life. The reason why I am not for sure if i am able to become one is I have attempted suicide before in my past.
Probably not. Police officers with no history of suicidal tendencies are at an elevated risk already because of the job; someone who has attempted suicide before would almost certainly be too much of a risk.

Hi PhillipBX,
Where I worked much of this issue falls under the medical portion of the process which a background investigator is unqualified to judge. However, it is my honest opinion and experience it will be a tough hurdle to clear.
Candidates who are successful in the earlier phases of the hiring process must then pass a medical and psychological evaluation. Many conditions including suicidal ideation is highly disqualifying. This is a determination made by a qualified medical professional.
Keep in mind there are many positions within law enforcement beyond sworn officers that are essential and very satisfying and may be of interest to you. Each position has distinct job qualifications. If you find your situation eliminates you from a sworn position, I encourage you to research/discover alternatives.
Good luck.

Do you still have thoughts of doing such and have you seen a psychologist/psychiatrist to talk out whatever issues lead you to attempt suicide? Career aspirations aside, if something has you taking action to attempt to kill yourself you need to speak to someone that can help about these issues.
