just curious, i'm sure it varies with location, district and what not, but on average how many drug related arrest does the average officer make in a month?

Location is what it's all about. Some of our guys downtown probably make 10 to 20 a month because it's all over. Others working other parts of the city might make 2 a year. A cop in a little bitty town might make 10 in an entire career when some cop in L.A. might makes that many a week. I can't imagine how you could determine an average, it's all about the demographics of the particular area you're in.

Drive is also a big player. I'm not that interested in drug arrests so I don't go looking for them. Still, I end up stumbling across one or two every couple of months. My district partner, however, is really into it and makes more than that a month, and we're in a very rural part of our county.

Absolutely. In some of the rural areas in Central Oregon, there are lots of drugs, not so much in some rural areas of S. Oregon though from what I understand.

Most of my drug arrests in uniform, I stumbled upon too. The areas I worked in the city always had a lot of other stuff going on that interested me more.

When I was a cop my Sgt had me cut someone loose because the guy with the coke beat me in rock paper scissors.

So I suppose we were making enough drug arrests on my side of town....

Yep. I thought of a dozen responses, but decided to see if anyone thought the same thing I did.

It's hard for me to gauge, since a lot of what I'm dealing with is civil violations of marijuana. What used to be arrests is now just a report and ticket.

I won't use just numbers, since it varies from month to month depending on my assignment, but I'll say that 75% of my reports are either drug arrests or marijuana seizures. I personally like looking for drugs and the weapons that come with them, so it's what I concentrate on when I'm on routine patrol.

I would imagine that's because of the population you're dealing with. Our downtown area has so many street urchins at night and most are carrying a little bit of weed that the guys don't mess with it much. They concentrate on the heroin, coke and meth dealers wandering around. Not to mention everyone and their dog has a medical marijuana card.

In fact, since we made less than an ounce a violation, it's a very low priority here. And it's fairly rare that weapons are associated with those holders in this area, they're usually just stoners. Before I retired, one uniform cop that worked day shift downtown was averaging 25++ arrests a month for cocaine, heroin and meth possession or sales. He made more felony arrests a year than anyone on the entire department for several years running. But that was about all he did though.

I just read it as sarcasm, but I'm weird...

Just in case y'all didn't know, Homer is a new screen name for a prior Verified LEO on the boards (imalazypup).

Could he pick up the old username and just get the tag removed, or use the old account with no tag and the new screen name?

Seems that an admin could make either change with relative ease...

I've informed FBINA188 about it, and I believe he is working on a solution.

I should have never made a post on this thread! I have not gotten an arrest since! The only excitement I have had was the minor I stopped with 20 cases of beer! Took him an hour to pour out 480 beers! :biggrin5:

For my agency, like others, it depends on where you work, what assignment you work, and the individual Deputy.

I don't have a big thing for dope, but i'll find some every few months or so. I'm also in the traffic unit and most of my arrests are DUI, while other portions of my time are spent working serious/fatal crash investigations.

I know a K9 Deputy that would find dope at least once, usually twice or more a shift. And most of it he never used his dog for. He himself just had a nose for it.

Drugs are actually the only thing I do concern myself with, despite the numerous other faucets of our job going on around me. I am not an immigration expert, or trade/cargo guru either, but I can tear a car apart and find hidden compartments like nobodys buisness. I obsess about drug seizures that go on nationally and locally, and BIG SEXY sends me great info to keep me on point. I have had seizures ranging from over 4000lb's down to your simple pothead and a baggie. To me, its the hunt that gets me excited.
