Hey guys I got a next question. Recently I was going through all my tax documents and came across my tax papers from 3 years ago and found something on it that caught my eye. The person who prepared my taxes listed I was a college student and at the current time i wasn't. And has me listed at a school I didn't attend.. I believe he misunderstood when we had a discussion about me going back to school and which schools I would like to attend. My question is will this affect me in any way possible during the investigation process ? Will they even look at that ? Do I mention it ? And what do I do ? because I really want this Position in the force and I don't want anything holding me back.
Thanks in advance.

I can't answer for the police questions as I am not a LEO, but you can amend your return.
Does it change what you owe? If it has no bearing on your taxes and wasn't used to gain any benefit (i.e. your status as a student at the school was not a material fact to your tax return), you are probably okay from an IRS point of view. Usually for perjury, it has to be a material fact that you are lying about. Even if you didn't get a tax advantage, if you used that return to obtain a benefit of any sort because of that status (i.e. health insurance from your parents or a tax deduction for your parents), it can be a problem because your student status could be material to that determination.
If it's just clerical in nature and has no bearing on anything, file the amended return that changes your occupation. If it changes anything else on your return because of that change in answer, then it was material and you committed perjury and you will need to rectify it. The data about your occupation is right next to your signature so I don't see how you missed it. I'm not a LEO but that lack of attention to detail about a sworn statement would concern me. It would concern me more if that false answer put money in somebody's pocket (your own or your parents). Others with NYPD experience will berate you further with actual information about the process.
Its a no worry situation. This has NO bearing on your tax status. The IRS uses that block for "statistical data" for Congress on who earns what. If the BI asks for them (big IF...they prefer the SS report instead), just explain the preparer used old info. That is not what the NYPD is looking at anyways on the form. I would not loose one wink of sleep. Its not a DQ.
Your can only do a "ammendment" if the numbers are wrong or your name or SSN.
See? What joey said. I didn't mean to scare you. I answer that question broadly myself but it has no bearing on my taxes. I didn't know if "student" could be used to claim health care or some other benefit under Obamacare that you shouldn't be entitled to. I have no special knowledge so disregard as blathering noise.
p.s. you really owe me because he would have berated you if I didn't say he would berate you further. it's opposite day.

No need for a completely new thread on a subject that is still open and not that old. Merging the two threads, just keep this one open.
So basically you were able to take either a deduction or credit because you filed taxes indicating that you paid tuition that you didn't pay?
If so, that would qualify as tax evasion. Just because a tax preparer did the return for you that doesn't absolve you of liability. You still are supposed to review the return before you signed it and make sure that everything is correct.
To me it's just a little fishy that you didn't "discover" this until you began to prepare for the hiring process of a law enforcement agency.

I was thinking this before he even made the second thread.

As fishy as it may sound i'm older now so my mind frame and level of attention to detail is different. Thing's i may have over looked when i was 22 i see and attention to now that i'm 26.

You need to file a "Ammended tax return" for that year. I am wondering though.....an accountant processes taxes based on forms and paperwork YOU give them. There is no way ANY accountant is going to risk their license and a IRS fine by just making crap up without you at least writing it on their forms or what you submitted or what you told them. Seems as if you may have played a roll in this......being stupid and milking the system. I know many folks who go to accountants and they all get your signature saying they are preparing the return based on info YOU provided. I have seen many accountants be pushed to do things they don't think are right or ethical, but at the end of the day, it is YOUR return and they have your signature on file and YOU are on the hook.
An ammendment means penalty and fees. You will need to find a real accountant and all the "real" info for tat year and have them fix it. And get ready to open the checkbook.

But as far as the preparer i think he mis understood what we we're talking about with me going back to school and which schools i was considering applying to. That's the only possible thing i can think of as to what happened.
